Project Description
The Prelude gas field is located in the Browse Basin offshore Western Australia in the WA-44-L permit. Containing an estimated 2 to 3 Tcf of recoverable gas, the Prelude field is 82.5% owned and operated by Shell. INPEX holds the remaining interest.

In 2007, the Prelude discovery well was found as an extension of the giant Ichthys gas field in the neighboring WA-285-P permit block owned by Inpex, but was a separated gas accumulation from Ichthys. After making this discovery, Shell began investigating the use of a floating-production, storage, and offloading vessel to develop gas reserves at the Prelude field. However, Shell has not proven enough reserves at Prelude to justify a multi-phase onshore liquefaction project. Traditionally, LNG projects need more than 5 Tcf of gas in order to construct offshore platforms, pipelines to shore and land-based processing plants.

Shell considered placing a floating LNG facility on Prelude in order to develop other marginal gas fields in the area at lower development costs. A year later, the operator embarked on a 12-well drilling campaign in the permit. Several small discoveries were made, but Shell has not released information on these finds. Recently, a 10th discovery called Concerto was made in the drilling campaign.

Concerto

A gas discovery was made in the Browse Basin offshore Western Australia at the Concerto-1 well in the WA-44-L permit. Shell operates and owns an 82.5 percent stake; while INPEX holds the remaining interest.

Testing is being conducted at Concerto to determine the extent of the field and its commerciality. If proven successful, the operator is considering tying back the gas discovery to the nearby Prelude field, located 10 miles (16 kilometers) away.

Crux

The Crux field is located in permit AC/P23, in the Browse Basin. Shell operates the field with an 80 percent interest; while Nexus holds 17 percent; and Osaka holds the remaining interest.

The discovery well intersected approximately 361 feet (110 meters) of high-quality net gas bearing sand over a 623 feet (190 meter) gross interval confirming the field extends into the previously undrilled South East Horst block.

Crux will serve as an integral part of the Prelude FLNG development, as the operator intends to use gas from Crux to ensure the Prelude LNG facility continues to remain at full throughput for as long as possible.

Contracts

Recently, Shell awarded a $5 billion contract to Samsung Heavy Industries to build a floating LNG facility – the first floating LNG plant in Australia.

The 3.5 million metric tons a year floating plant is expected to be 1,575 feet (480 meters) long with a width of 262 feet (80 meters), and will be located on the Prelude field.

Shell Cuts Steel on Prelude FLNG
Type: Facility Construction

Oct. 2012 - Shell and its partners announced steel cutting for what will be the world's first floating liquid natural gas facility. When complete, the Prelude FLNG vessel will be 1,600 feet long and 242 feet wide and will be the largest offshore floating facility ever built. Prelude will be deployed approximately 120 miles off the Australian coast in block WA-44-L serving the Prelude and Concerto fields. FLNG technology will eventually make it economical to develop gas fields that are currently considered too far from shore or to remote to produce. The facility is expected to receive first gas some time in 2017. At peak production the facility will deliver 3.6 million tons of LNG and 400,000 tons of LPG per year.

New Crux JV to Accelerate Exploration of Offshore Crux Field
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2012 - Nexus Energy has inked an agreement with Shell and Osaka Gas following board approvals Friday to form a new joint venture which will accelerate the exploration and development of the Crux gas and condensate field offshore Western Australia. The final agreement was formally signed and executed. The agreement sees Shell taking its place as the operator of the production license AC/L9 with an 80 percent interest. Nexus and Osaka Gas hold a 17 percent and 3 percent interest respectively. The agreement also provides Nexus with a 12 month put option to sell 2 percent of its equity interest in the JV to Shell for $78.6 million (AUD75 million). Nexus said in a statement that the JV will initially focus on converting the existing AC/L9 offshore production license into a retention lease. This will require a detailed work program, which include technical studies of a range of development options, including a standalone development concept, and exploration drilling of the Auriga prospect targeted for early 2014. The development options currently under consideration for the Crux field include a tie-in to Shell's Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel or a standalone FLNG project.

Shell's Prelude FLNG Wins Environmental Nod
Type: Status Update

Nov. 2010 - Shell's Prelude FLNG project received an environmental approval from the Australian Minister for Environment, Tony Burke. Even though this approval is an important milestone for the project, several hurdles must still be crossed before operations can begin, including the development of an oil spill contingency plan, to the Government's satisfaction, specifying how it will minimize the risks of oil spills and how it will minimize environmental impacts in the event of an oil spill, said Burke. Shell will also need to develop a publicly available greenhouse gas strategy that will detail proposed measures and offsets to reduce GHG emissions. If approvals are given on all fronts, the Prelude project is planned to be the first to deploy Shell's innovative Floating LNG (FLNG) technology. The technology will process the gas at the site of the field rather than piping it hundreds of kilometers to shore. Shell is the Operator and 100% equity holder of the WA-371-P permit in the Browse Basin, approximately 295 miles (475 kilometers) northeast of Broome, Western Australia, and more than 124 miles (200 kilometers) from the nearest point on the mainland.
