Considered one of Australia's largest resource project, the Wheatstone gas to LNG project incorporates two fields: Wheatstone and Iago, located offshore Western Australia in the Northern Carnarvon Basin.
The Wheatstone Project will produce from exploration permits WA-253-P, WA-17-R, and WA-16-R, located roughly 90 miles (145 kilometers) offshore, approximately 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of Barrow Island and 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Onslow.
Wheatstone
Discovered in August 2004, Wheatstone spans exploration permits WA-17-R and WA-253-P. Situated 110 miles (177 kilometers) west-northwest of Dampier in Western Australia, the Wheatstone gas field lies in waters measuring 700 feet (213 meters) deep.

Wheatstone
Discovered in August 2004, Wheatstone spans exploration permits WA-17-R and WA-253-P. Situated 110 miles (177 kilometers) west-northwest of Dampier in Western Australia, the Wheatstone gas field lies in waters measuring 700 feet (213 meters) deep.
Spudded on July 23, 2004 on WA-17-R, the Wheatstone-1 discovery well was drilled by the Sedco 703 semisub to a total depth of 11,096 feet (3,382 meters). The well encountered 175 feet (53 meters) of net gas sands in the Jurassic Tithionian and Triassic Mungaroo A sands within a 413-foot (126-meter) hydrocarbon column. Constrained by rig equipment, a production test of the discovery well flowed at a rate of 54 MMcf/d (1.5 MMcm/d).
Chevron serves as the operator of Wheatstone, holding a 57% interest; Apache holds a 16.25%; Pan Pacific holds 10%; Shell holds 8%; and KUFPEC holds the remaining 8.75%. The Wheatstone field is estimated to hold 4.5 Tcf (127 Bcm) of natural gas.
Iago
Discovered in December 2000, the Iago gas field spans retention permits WA-17-R and WA-16-R, 80 miles (129 kilometers) offshore northwestern Australia. Drilled to a total depth of 11,100 feet (3,383 meters) by the Pride South Pacific semisub, the Iago-1 well encountered gas in the Triassic Mungaroo Formation. After wireline logs and formation tests were completed, the Iago-1 well was plugged and abandoned as a gas discovery on Jan. 3, 2001.
The Iago field was significantly extended in July 2008 when the Iago-2 well encountered additional pay on WA-16-R. Drilled by the Ocean Bounty semisub in 384 feet (117 meters) of water, the Iago-2 well intersected 154 feet (47 meters) of net pay, confirming a southerly extension to the field. Subsequently, a drill stem test over a 105-foot (32-meter) interval flowed at a rate of 53 MMcf/d (1.5 MMcm/d).
Chevron holds 100% interest in the WA-17-R permit and 66.7% interest in the WA-16-R permit. Shell holds the remaining 33.3% interest in WA-16-R.
Julimar
Situated offshore Australia in WA-356-P in 614 feet (187 meters) of water is the Julimar gas field, which is operated by Apache, holding a 65% interest; Kufpec holds the remaining interest.
The Julimar-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 12,221 feet (3,725 meters), discovering 132 feet (40 meters) of natural gas pay in the prolific Triassic Mungaroo formation. A production test was conducted on two zones, flowing a combined 85 MMcf/d, precluding the need for further testing of the well. Several months later, the Julimar East-1 appraisal well logged 224 feet (68 meters) of net gas pay in six sandstone reservoirs in the Triassic Mungaroo formation. Three of the six intersected pay zones in Julimar East-1 are stratigraphically equivalent to gas bearing reservoirs in the Julimar-1 well, which was suspended as a future production well.
A year later, another well was drilled; the Julimar Southeast-1 discovery on Australia's Northwest Shelf logged 195 feet (59 meters) of net pay across five intervals of the Triassic Mungaroo Sandstone. The well, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from Julimar-1, was not tested, logging 132 feet (40 meters) of net pay. A fourth appraisal well, the Julimar Northwest-1 exploration well logged 43 feet (13 meters) of net pay in the J-17 Triassic Mungaroo sandstone.
Field Development
In March 2008, Chevron announced that the Wheatstone project will be developed as a greenfield onshore LNG and domestic gas project. Split into a number of phases, the first phase of development on Wheatstone comprises an offshore central processing platform, a 200-kilometer (124-mile) pipeline to shore and onshore gas liquefaction consisting of two processing trains with a combined production capability of approximately 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per year. The onshore facilities also include storage and offloading infrastructure and a domestic gas plant.
Over 2008, an extensive seven-well appraisal program was performed on the Wheatstone and Iago fields, confirming that the fields hold sufficient reserves to support the construction of a two-train LNG facility.
A final investment decision on the first phase of the project will be submitted after the FEED is completed.

Apache Kicks Off Development Planning for Balnaves Discovery
Type: Development Activity
Oct. 2010 - Three wells drilled appraising the Balnaves-1 discovery in License WA-356-P offshore Western Australia have kicked off development planning by Apache Corporation's subsidiary, Apache Julimar. The Balnaves field is an oil accumulation in the Mungaroo formation in a separate reservoir beneath the large gas reservoirs of the Brunello gas field. The recently drilled Balnaves-3 appraisal well test-flowed 9,076 barrels of oil and 13 MMcf/d of natural gas from a 16-foot (5-meter) perforated section, confirming good reservoir deliverability, stated Apache. Drilled in 2009 by the Stena Clyde semisub, the Balnaves-1 discovery well is part of a series of gas exploration and appraisal wells in the Julimar-Brunello complex. The discovery well encountered 64 feet (20 meters) of net oil pay in the B20 sand – a light, high-quality oil accumulation at a depth of 10,600 to 10,700 feet (3,231 to 3,261 meters). Balnaves-2 was a sidetrack from the discovery, and Balnaves-4 was a sidetrack from Balnaves-3. In March 2008, Chevron announced that the Wheatstone project will be developed as a greenfield onshore LNG and domestic gas project. Front-end engineering and design is scheduled for the second half of 2009. Chevron also operates the Greater Gorgon project in the Carnarvon Basin, which is being developed as a subsea tie-back to onshore LNG facilities.

Under Development - Feb 24, 2009 to -
Over 2008, an extensive seven-well appraisal program was performed on the Wheatstone and Iago fields, confirming that the fields hold sufficient reserves to support the construction of a two-train LNG facility. FEED is scheduled for the second half of 2009. Additionally, two rigs are scheduled to drill multiple exploration and appraisal wells on the area through 2009.
|
|
Appraisal Drilling - Jul 2008 to Jul 2008
The Iago field was significantly extended in July 2008 when the Iago-2 well encountered additional pay on WA-16-R. Drilled by the Ocean Bounty semisub in 384 feet (117 meters) of water, the Iago-2 well intersected 154 feet (47 meters) of net pay, confirming a southerly extension to the field. Subsequently, a drill stem test over a 105-foot (32-meter) interval flowed at a rate of 53 MMcf/d (1.5 MMcm/d).

|
Discovery (Appraised) - Jan 2001 to Jan 2001
Wireline logs and formation tests have been run and indicate that a hydrocarbon column has been intersected in the Triassic Mungaroo Formation primary objective. The well was cased and suspended as a gas discovery on Jan. 3, 2001.
