Project Description
The Valhall oil field lies in the Norwegian North Sea on Blocks 2/8 and 2/11 in 230 feet (70 meters) of water. Hess currently owns 64% of the Valhall field, while BP holds the remaining 36%.

Vahall was discovered in 1969 by well 2/11-1. After six years of exploration, a further discovery well, 2/8-6, was drilled. Five additional exploration wells confirmed the field held an estimated 2 billion barrels of oil in place.

In 1981, the field was developed by three fixed platforms and commenced production in 1982.

In 1996, further field development included a Wellhead Platform (WP) installed on the southwest section of Valhall. A year later, the field produced 84,500 bopd from 33 wells. As the field aged and slowly declined in production, additional wells, 90 in total, were drilled.

Recently, the field was revamped in order for the complex to receive its power from shore, making Valhall the world's first offshore oil field to receive its electricity from land, with no need for on-platform generation. BP replaced subsiding facilities, added two new facilities to the complex and added a new power system in place of the old offshore gas turbines. The new power system will delver 78 megawatt power for the running of the oil field. Valhall is expected to produce until 2050 and during its lifetime, it will be one of the most environmental friendly fields offshore Norway.

Valhall Complex

The complex consists of five separate steel platforms, connected by bridges, for quarters, drilling, wellheads, production and water injection. The five platforms are: the Quarters Platform (QP), the Drilling Platform (DP), the Production Platform (PCP), the Wellhead Platform (WP) and the Water Injection Platform (IP). The field also has two additional unmanned Flank Platforms, located on the south and north sides, roughly 6 kilometers from the complex.

QP was built in 1979 and installed on the field in July 1981. DP has 30 well slots, is located in the middle of the complex, and commenced production on Dec. 17, 1981. PCP is 213 feet (65 meters) high, weighs 21,000 tons (19,051 tonnes), and can process 198,000 barrels of oil and 350 MMcf/d. Oil is sent to the 2/4-J facility at the nearby Ekofisk Center on the Ekofisk field, and then exported to Teesside. Gas is transported via the Norpipe pipeline to Germany.

WP has 19 well slots, was installed in April 1996 and commenced production in June of that same year. Additionally, a new fixed steel platform, the IP, is bridge-linked to WP and has integrated topsides with water injection facilities, seawater and produced water treatment facilities and power generation. The platform design allows for drilling and maintenance of wells on the new platform and on the existing WP platform.

Currently, the new Production and Hotel (PH) facility is under construction and is expected to come on-stream soon. The facility will be powered from shore by a power cable. The facility has a design life of 40 years, a bed capacity of 150 personnel, an oil production capacity of 150,000 bopd, gas handling capacity of 175 MMcf/d, and total liquid capacity of 250,000 bpd (oil and water).

Valhall Flank Platforms

The Valhall Flank platforms are identical unmanned wellhead platforms equipped with 16 drilling slots each. Each of the Flank Platforms plays an important part on the Valhall field; they help improve the field's recovery rate by reaching more remote resources. Eight wells are drilled from each platform, one waste injector and seven producers, but there is room for future water injection and gas lift wells.

Both platforms are powered from the Valhall field and are monitored from existing Valhall facilities via a fiber optic cable. Each platform also has a multi-phase pipeline connected to the Valhall complex for processing.

The South Flank Platform commenced production on May 8, 2003 and the North Flank Platform commenced production on Jan. 7, 2004.

BP Powers-Up New Facilities at Valhall
Type: Development Activity

Jan. 2013 - BP's Valhall re-development project continues with the recent start-up of new facilities attached to the complex. The project includes a new production, utilities and quarters (PUQ) platform and a system of bridges and walkways to link the new platform to the complex. Additionally, the facilities are now 100% reliant on shore power which will reduce direct emissions from the field to almost zero. With the addition of the PUQ, the Valhall complex comprises six fully manned platforms consisting of: living quarters, drilling, production, wellhead, water injection and the new PUQ. The complicated expansion project is designed to give the field an extra forty years of commercial life. With the new facilities, online production is expected to reach 65,000 boepd in the second half of 2013.
