Project Description
The K2 project consists of four fields - Marco Polo, Genghis Khan, K2 and K2 North - tied-back to a platform, the Marco Polo TLP. All four fields are located in the Green Canyon area in the Gulf of Mexico and have estimated recoverable reserves in excess of 100 million boe.

Marco Polo Tension Leg Platform

Located 7 miles (11 kilometers) away on Green Canyon Block 608 in 4,300 feet (1,311 meters) of water, the Marco Polo TLP serves as a production hub for the K2, K2 North, Marco Polo, and Genghis Khan fields.

The Marco Polo TLP consists of two primary segments, namely the hull and the deck. The platform has a displacement of 27,500 tons (25,000 tonnes); a hull weight of 5,750 tons (5,216 tonnes); and a payload of 14,000 tons (12,701 ...

The platform has a displacement of 27,500 tons (25,000 tonnes); a hull weight of 5,750 tons (5,216 tonnes); and a payload of 14,000 tons (12,701 tonnes). The deck and facilities include a three-level, 65,000 square foot deck with a capacity to accommodate a completion rig.

Installed in January 2004, the Marco Polo facility is the world's deepest dry tree TLP. The floating production facility, which is owned by GulfTerra and CalDive and operated by Anadarko, was built to handle 120,000 bopd and 300 MMboe.

In June 2002, GulfTerra and Cal Dive formed a 50/50 venture, Deepwater Gateway, L.L.C., to construct, install and own the TLP. The JV then leased the facility to Anadarko to produce from the various fields.

Processing capacity was upsized during construction to accommodate new area discoveries as potential tie-backs. Anadarko required 50,000 bpd and 150 MMcf/d (4 MMcm/d) of processing capacity, but it was designed to process 120,000 b/d and 300 MMcf/d (8 MMcm/d) with space for up to six subsea tie-backs.

Marco Polo Field

The Marco Polo field is located on Green Canyon Block 608, 160 miles (257 kilometers) south of New Orleans, La. Marco Polo is fully owned and operated by Anadarko Petroleum.

Discovered in April 2000, the field lies in a water depth of 4,300 feet (1,311 meters). The field was developed by six wells tied-back to the Marco Polo TLP, and commenced production in March 2004.

Genghis Khan Field

Located in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, approximately 120 miles (193 kilometers) off the coast of Louisiana is the Genghis Khan oil and gas field. Situated on Green Canyon Block 652 in a water depth of 4,300 feet (1,311 meters), BHP Billiton, operator, holds a 44% interest; Hess and Repsol each own 28%. Previously drilled and owned by Anadarko, BHP Billiton acquired its interest in February 2007 for $1.33 billion.

The field was discovered in 2005 and includes estimated gross hydrocarbon reserves of 65 to 170 MMbo. Currently, Genghis Khan comprises four development wells connected to a subsea manifold, which is then connected to the Marco Polo TLP.

First oil was produced from Genghis Khan in October 2007, from the first of the field's four subsea wells.

The Genghis Khan field development compromises the western flank of the Shenzi structure, which also includes Mad Dog, Atlantis and Neptune. The Atlantis and Neptune fields, located on the Western Atwater Foldbelt region of the Gulf of Mexico, are also producing large quantities of oil and gas per day. These projects along with Genghis Khan are boosting BHP Billiton’s net production in the region to more than 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

Production from these blocks are transported to a third-party owned and operated facility that processes and sends by existing pipelines to markets located onshore of Texas and Louisiana. The oil is marketed as a blend of crude oils from other pipeline shippers.

K2 Field

The K2 oil field is located on Green Canyon Block 562, roughly 124 miles (200 kilometers) off the coast of Louisiana. The field is in a water depth of 4,000 feet (1,200 meters).

Anadarko serves as the operator of K2 with 42% working interest. ENI holds 12.5; ConocoPhillips holds 12.5%; Ecopetrol holds 9%; Nippon Oil holds 12%; and MCX holds the remaining 12%.

Discovered in 1999, the K2 field underwent additional drilling in 2000 when an exploration sidetrack and a bypass were drilled to further evaluate the field.

The project was sanctioned February 2004 and commenced production in the third quarter of 2005.

K2 North Field

The K2 North satellite field, located on Green Canyon Block 518, is in a water depth of 4,000 feet (1,219 meters). Anadarko serves as the operator of the field with 45% interest. ENI holds 30%; ConocoPhillips holds 13%; and Union Oil Company of California holds the remaining 12%.

The field is tied to the Marco Polo TLP and commenced production on May 26, 2005.

Samurai

An oil discovery, Samurai, was found on June 24, 2009 on the Green Canyon Block 432 in the Gulf of Mexico. The Belford Dolphin drillship drilled the well in approximately 3,400 feet of water and reached a total depth of 31,700 feet. The well encountered in excess of 120 feet of net pay in high quality Miocene Sands.

Anadarko is the operator of Samurai holding a 33.33% interest in the prospect. Partners in the discovery are Murphy Oil Corporation (33.33%) and Samson Offshore Co. (33.33%).

The company expects to drill a sidetrack appraisal well within the next year, and if the prospect is proven commercially viable, Samurai will be tied-back to the Marco Polo TLP.
