GDF Suez, which holds a 38.75% interest, operates Cygnus; Centrica holds 48.75%; and Endeavour holds the remaining 12.5%.

Cygnus was discovered in 1988 by the 44/12-1 exploration well, which found a gas bearing Leman reservoir. A year later, the find was appraised by well 44/11-2, confirming the presence of both Leman and Carboniferous reservoirs in a separate fault block. In 2006, another appraisal well, 44/12-2, drilled in the original discovery fault block confirmed the reservoir held gas. Holding an estimated 500 Bcf of gas in place, Cygnus is one of the largest discoveries in the southern North Sea.

Further appraisal drilling was conducted in February 2009 to prove the presence of the Leman reservoir in the eastern part of the field to assess reservoir quality and fluid content of the primary Leman reservoir and to test the deeper Carboniferous reservoir as a secondary target. The well, 44/12a-3, was drilled by the Noble Ronald Hoope jackup, confirming the presence of gas in both intervals of the reservoir. Three months later, a fourth well was drilled – 44/12/a-4 – to determine the size of the field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 12,284 feet (3,744 meters) and flow tested at a rate of 32 MMcf/d from the targeted Rotliegendes Leman reservoir.

Additional appraisal drilling was conducted in the first quarter of 2010, leading to an increase in reserves and prospective resource estimates, and confirming the field boundary of Cygnus further extends to the north and to the west than previously thought.

Preliminary estimates of the field's reserves and prospective resources may be as high as 2 Tcf of gas based on new data information, making Cygnus one of the largest gas fields ever discovered in the UK sector of the North Sea. The 44/11a-4 well was drilled to a depth of 12,207 feet (3,721 meters) vertically, encountering a high-quality, gas-saturated Leman sand reservoir 54 feet (16 meters) high to prognosis with a sand thickness of 130 feet (40 meters) gross and 85 feet (26 meters) of net pay. Following a flow test, the well tested at a rate of 28 MMcf/d.

Field Development

A development plan for the first phase of the field was submitted and approved on Aug. 6, 2009 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

The first phase of development will focus on the eastern part of the field, consisting of two production wells connecting to an unmanned wellhead platform. Production will be exported via a 17 mile (27-kilometer), 12-inch-diameter pipeline to the Murdoch field center.
This part of development is expected to come online in 2015.

In later stages of development, up to five platforms could be installed and up to 15 wells drilled.
