Discovered by Chevron in January 2006, Big Foot is considered to be one of the largest and deepest oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico. The field is located on Walker Ridge Block 29, roughly 225 miles (362 kilometers) south of New Orleans, in 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) of water.
Chevron, the operator, owns 60% interest in the field; Statoil owns 27.5% interest; and Marubeni Oil & Gas owns the remaining 12.5% interest.
The discovery was made when the Big Foot No. 2 well encountered 300 feet (91 meters) of net pay. The Cajun Express semisub drilled in approximately 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) of water, reaching a total depth of 25,127 feet (7,660 meters).

The discovery was made when the Big Foot No. 2 well encountered 300 feet (91 meters) of net pay. The Cajun Express semisub drilled in approximately 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) of water, reaching a total depth of 25,127 feet (7,660 meters).
In 2007, an appraisal well, Big Foot No. 2, sidetrack No. 3, was drilled by the ENSCO 7500 semisub to a vertical depth of 24,434 feet (7,447 meters), one-half mile (2.4 kilometers) north of the discovery well. The sidetrack encountered the same pay intervals as the discovery well.
Another appraisal well, Big Foot No. 3, sidetrack No. 2, was drilled to a depth of 25,113 feet (7,654 meters), northwest of the previous well. The drilling confirmed the same pay intervals as the previous drilling, and found the main pay sand full of oil to the base.
The Big Foot oil and gas reservoir is estimated to contain more than 100 MMboe. Currently, Chevron is evaluating how the Big Foot field will be developed, and the field is expected to come on-stream in 2013.
Field Development
On Nov. 2, 2009, KBR received a FEED contract from Chevron for Big Foot's proposed extended tension leg platform facility. Moored in 5,300 feet (1,615 meters) of water, the dry-tree floating, drilling and production facility will have topside oil and gas processing facilities that will include inlet separation, gas compression, dehydration and export, oil treatment and export pumping, produced water treatment and required utility systems.
KBR's contract encompasses engineering and project management services to develop the process design; specify the required equipment; layout; modularize and integrate the decks; perform the necessary structural analysis; and provide the electrical power generation and distribution system designed to support the platform and downhole electrical submersible pump requirements.
Another contract was awarded to FloaTEC to conduct a FEED for the hull, mooring and risers of the facility. The contract also entails for FloaTEC to assist the operator in estimating the cost of the facility and plan the subsequent phases of development. It is reported Chevron will sanction the project in the fourth quarter of 2010 after the FEED process is completed, followed by a tender for the engineering phase.
