Exploration
In 2007, Anadarko drilled the first well, Mahogany-1, in a water depth of 4,331 feet (1,320 meters) to a total depth of 13,780 feet (4,200 meters). The discovery encountered a gross hydrocarbon column of 886 feet (270 meters). The second well, Hyedua-1, encountered 354 feet (108 meters) of stacked reservoir sands. Situated in a water depth of 5,020 feet (1,530 meters), the Hyedua well reached a total depth of 13,130 feet (4,002 meters) and confirmed 1,184 feet (361 meters) of a hydrocarbon column. After these two wells were drilled on the Tano License, Ghana's government named the discovery Jubilee.
In January 2009, the partners decided to explore the neighboring West Cape Three Points License and found an additional well that confirmed the previous discoveries. The third well, Mahogany-3 intersected a significant light oil column, 108 feet (33 meters) of net pay, during Jubilee's appraisal drilling. Drilled by the Eirik Raude semisub in a water depth of 4,055 feet (1,236 meters), the drilling reached a total depth of 13,215 feet (4,028 meters) and found 52 feet (16 meters) of high quality stacked oil-bearing sands. This finding confirmed the Jubilee field extended farther south than previously thought.
To further appraise Jubilee, the partners continued to explore the Deepwater Tano license and found another well, Hyedua-2. This well was drilled to a total depth of 12,018 feet (3,663 meters) by the Blackford Dolphin semisub in a water depth of 4,088 feet (1,246 meters), and intersected 180 feet (55 meters) of high quality oil bearing reservoir sandstones. Three flow tests were conducted, and production flowed at a maximum rate of 16,750 bopd of 37-degree API and 21 MMcf/d (.60 MMcm/d). The Hyedua-2 well is located on the northwest section of the Jubilee field.
These findings confirmed the Jubilee field is a continuous stratigraphic trap with combined hydrocarbon columns in excess of 1,969 feet (600 meters).
Jubilee Field Development
Since several wells containing large amounts of oil have been discovered, the partners decided to develop the Jubilee field in several phases.
On July 13, 2009, the Minister of Energy in Ghana formally approved Phase 1 of development on the Jubilee field. It is estimated that phase-one development will produce in excess of the planned 300 million barrels of recoverable oil.
Phase 1 focuses on the core area of the field and calls for 17 subsea wells, including up to nine oil producers, fiver water injection wells and three gas injection wells, tied-back to the Kwame Nkrumah MV21 FPSO. The development process has been designed so that produced gas will be available for export to shore and/or re-injected into the reservoir, thereby eliminating gas flaring.
Major contracts for the field's development have been awarded. In August 2008, Modec received a contract to provide and operate an FPSO to be installed on the Jubilee field. The contract is a seven-year lease with 13 one-year options.
The FPSO is moored in 3,609 feet (1,100 meters) of water and will process more than 120,000 bopd and 160 MMcf/d (4.5 MMcm/d). The vessel is designed to remain on the field for 20 years without dry docking.
Technip will design and fabricate four production risers, two gas injection risers, one water injection riser and one gas export riser. The company will also design, procure, fabricate, transport and install the foundation piles for the riser bases and manifolds, rigid steel flowlines, pipeline end terminations, rigid flowline jumpers, and rigid well jumpers.
Phase 1 commenced production on Dec. 15, 2010.

ExxonMobil Buys Stake in Major West African Field
Type: Operator Update
Oct. 2009 - ExxonMobil has agreed to buy a $4 billion stake in the Jubilee development off the coast of Ghana, according to people involved in the deal. The deal is Exxon's first major purchase in a decade and appears to highlight that the company believes oil prices will rise over the long term. Some energy analysts have asserted that weak demand for the fuel can't support even the current price of $70 a barrel. People briefed on the deal said that while the parties have reached a binding agreement, the deal hasn't yet been completed and is therefore subject to change. One outstanding issue is that the Ghanaian national oil company has the right to increase its stake, according to a person involved in the transaction.
