Field Development
Approved by the Thailand Department of Mineral Fuels in 2006, the field development plan for the Bualuang field includes subsea wells, an unmanned wellhead platform and an FPSO.
The first phase of subsea development includes six wells: five production wells and one water injection well. Each well was completed with a down-hole electrical submersible pump and gravel packs.
Drilled by the Ensco 51 jackup, both the Bualuang 05 and Bualuang 01 development wells encountered additional oil pay. Drilled to a total vertical depth of 4,006 feet (1,221 meters), the Bualuang 05 intersected an 82-foot (25-meter) oil column; and the Bualuang 01 well was drilled to a total vertical depth of 4,167 feet (1,270 meters) and encountered 75 feet (23 meters) of gross oil pay. The development drilling proved the field had a better quality reservoir, leading project partners to increase the proved reserves on the field from 7.2 to 11 MMbo, and the proved and probable reserves from 14.9 to 20 MMbo.
Boasting dynamic positioning, the FPSO Rubicon Vantage is moored by a single-point mooring system in 197 feet (60 meters) of water. With a storage capacity of 570,000 barrels of oil, the vessel is capable of processing up to 40,000 bopd. Converted from the Nordic Trym in the Singapore Technologies' shipyard, the Rubicon Vantage measures 755 feet (230 meters) long and 105 feet (32 meters) wide. On service contract from Rubicon Offshore, the FPSO sailed for the Bualuang field in April 2008.
Constructed by Clough Limited in Thailand, the unmanned wellhead platform was installed on the field in January 2008. Emas Construction & Production was awarded the contract for the project management, engineering and offshore installation of the jacket, topsides, pipelines and FPSO moorings. The Lewek Champion heavy-lift pipelay barge was used.
Production and Future Development
Production commenced at Bualuang on Aug. 27, 2008, from the AB-05 well. Subsequently, the other production wells were hooked-up and brought on stream through early September 2008. Although the field quickly began producing at a daily rate of 17,000 bopd, production was choked back to help maintain reservoir pressure and maximize recoverable hydrocarbons.
Project partners are further developing Bualuang. Step-out potential exists in the East Bualuang fault terrace, which holds an additional 5 MMboe in resource potential. Also, the field exhibits up-dip potential, and deeper reservoir targets under the main reservoir have been identified. Additionally, existing 2D seismic data on the block show that there are another two prospects that appear to be parallel to the Bualuang field.
A 3D seismic survey over the B8/38 license commenced early 2009, as well as additional development, appraisal and exploration drilling.

Salamander to Conduct DST on Far East Prospect
Type: Development Activity
Jun. 2012 - Salamander Energy reported that the Far East prospect on the Bualuang field in License B8/38 in the Gulf of Thailand has reached a total vertical depth of 4,580 feet (1,396 meters) and is currently being prepared for a Drill Stem test. The well encountered an 82 foot (25 meter) section of excellent quality T5 Miocene sandstones, the primary target on depth prognosis. However, following the acquisition of a full suite of wireline logs, these sandstones are interpreted to be water-wet, with no evidence of hydrocarbon saturation. The well was then deepened to test the secondary objective. The well penetrated a conglomeratic section overlying the Ratburi carbonates from 4,423 feet (1,348 meters) TVDSS to current total depth ("TD"). Oil shows were observed at 4,482 feet (1,366 meters) TVDSS and severe mud losses were experienced from 4,495 feet (1,370 meters) TVDSS. Interpretation of logging while drilling data shows zones of potential oil pay in highly porous section from 4,478 feet (1,365 meters) to current TD.
