Project Description
The Platypus prospect lies on Block 48/1 in the Northern section of the North Sea in 43 meters of water. Dana Petroleum serves as the operator of Platypus and holds a 40% interest; Endeavour holds a 25% interest; Cal Energy holds a 15% interest; Parkmead Group acquired XTO's 15% interest in 2012; and CMI holds the remaining 5% interest.

Some 218 vertical feet (66 meters) of good quality gas bearing sands were encountered in the well, and an extensive set of wireline log data is being acquired over the reservoir section.

Preliminary analysis indicates that the reserves discovered correlate with pre-drill estimates of approximately 130 Bcf of gas. Once logging is complete, a multi-rate drill stem test will be performed, and the complete data set will then be analyzed to assess development options. The 48/1a-5 well will be suspended for potential re-entry and future use as a gas production well.

In August 2012, the operator completed appraisal operations on the Platypus gas appraisal well, which recorded a test flow rate of 27 MMcf/d on a 96/64-inch choke. The ENSCO 80 (225’ ILC) jackup drilled the well to a total measured depth of 14,175 feet (4,321 meters). A drill stem test was completed and the well is being suspended for use as a future production well.

Dana Successfully Appraises Platypus
Type: Appraisal Operations

Aug. 2012 - Dana Petroleum reported that the Platypus gas appraisal well in the Southern North Sea has recorded a test flow rate of 27 MMcf/d on a 96/64-inch choke. The ENSCO 80 (225' ILC) jackup drilled the well to a total measured depth of 14,175 feet (4,321 meters). A drill stem test was completed and the well is being suspended for use as a future production well. Platypus is located in Block 48/1a in the UK southern North Sea. It was discovered in 2010 when well 48/1a-5 encountered the gas bearing Lower Leman Sandstone reservoir.

Dana Spuds Platypus Appraisal Well
Type: Appraisal Operations

Apr. 2012 - Dana has spud an appraisal well on the Platypus gas field in the UK sector of the North Sea. The Rotliegendes gas accumulation at Platypus was discovered in 2010 by the Dana Petroleum plc operated 48/1a-5 well, which encountered 218 vertical feet (66 meters) of gas bearing sands and has the potential to contain up to 180 billion cubic feet of gas in place. Drilling operations are being performed by the ENSCO 80 (250' ILC) drilling rig. This well will be drilled horizontally through the Rotliegendes gas reservoir to confirm deliverability and is expected to be suspended for reuse as a gas producer.

Type: New Discovery

Apr. 2010 - A significant gas discovery was made on the 48/1a-5 well at the Platypus prospect. Drilled by the GSF Labrador jackup in a water depth of roughly 142 feet (43 meters) to a total measured depth of 11,048 feet (3,367 meters), the well targeted a high quality Rotliegend age, Lower Leman prospect. Dana to Spud Platypus Prospect in UK North Sea
Type: Status Update

Feb. 2010 - Dana plans to spud a well on the Platypus prospect in the very near term with the GSF Labrador jackup. The well will test the Rotliegendes formation estimated to contain 80 Bcf. Platypus lies within the greater Cygnus focus area in the UK sector of the North Sea on Block 48/1a in a water depth of 141 feet (43 meters) and is considered relatively low risk. Dana operates the prospect, holding a 40% interest.

Dana Gears Up to Drill Offshore Platypus Prospect
Type: Status Update

Nov. 2009 - A well on the Platypus prospect, operated by Dana, is slated for drilling in the first quarter of 2010. The prospect will test the Rotliegendes formation that is estimated to contain 80 Bcf. Platypus lies within the greater Cygnus focus area in the UK sector of the North Sea on Block 48/1a and is considered relatively low risk.

Discovery (Appraised) - Aug 09, 2012 to -

Appraisal Drilling - Apr 17, 2012 to Aug 08, 2012

Drilling operations are being performed by the ENSCO 80 (250’ ILC) drilling rig. This well will be drilled horizontally through the Rotliegendes gas reservoir to confirm deliverability and is expected to be suspended for reuse as a gas producer.

Discovery (Drilled) - Apr 16, 2010 to Apr 16, 2012

The Platypus well in the UK Southern North Sea discovered approximately 130bcf of gas in line with pre-drill estimates. Dana is undertaking technical work to fully evaluate the well results and integrate them into a development study, building on its experience in the area, in order to commercialize the discovery.

Exploratory Drilling - Mar 01, 2010 to Apr 15, 2010

Drilled by the GSF Labrador jackup in a water depth of roughly 142 feet (43 meters) to a total measured depth of 11,048 feet (3,367 meters), the well targeted a high quality Rotliegend age, Lower Leman prospect. Some 218 vertical feet (66 meters) of good quality gas bearing sands were encountered in the well, and an extensive set of wireline log data is being acquired over the reservoir section.
