| Description |
| |
Located in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, the Pompano field development project has proved productive for more than 15 years. One of the first deepwater projects in the Gulf, Pompano is being used as a production hub for area fields.
Situated on Viosca Knoll 989, Pompano was discovered on May 1, 1981. Stone Energy serves as the operator of Pompano with 100% interest.
Field Development
Pompano was developed using a four-leg, 12-pile fixed production platform. Located in 1,300 feet (396 meters) of water, the Pompano platform consists of a jacket and deck with processing and drilling facilities. One of the largest fixed structures in the Gulf of Mexico, the Pompano platform was used to drill some 40 wells, of which, 25 are still in production.
In February 1992, J. Ray McDermott was awarded the FEED design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation of the production platform. The 38,000-ton (34,473-tonne) jacket was completed in July 1994, and the deck was completed the next month. Marine installation took place in August 1994.
Commencing production in October 1994, Pompano reached a plateau production of 60,000 bopd and 90 MMcf/d (2.5 MMcm/d) of gas.
Subsequent Development
In an effort to maintain production rates over the years, project partners have employed workover programs, gas-lift systems and electric submersible pumps on the field.
Located 5 miles (8 kilometers) away in 2,000 feet (610 meters) of water, an additional 10-well subsea template was added to the Pompano field (on Mississippi Canyon Block 28) and tied-back to the Pompano production facility.
In May 1994, J. Ray McDermott was awarded the contract for the tie-back addition. Completed in April 1996, the work scope included the FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation of the pipeline and umbilical linked to the Pompano platform.
In order to accommodate the added gas volumes, the platform added a processing unit and replaced its controls with a new automated central control room. Udelhoven International was chosen to provide project coordination of the upgrades, including a new control room and flare boom, as well as some electrical modifications, with work starting in 2001. Additionally, a new fire and gas system was installed in 2004.
In December 2008, Worley Parsons was named the engineering and project management services provider for the facilities. A four-year agreement, the contract includes brownfield topsides modifications and topsides work connected to tie-backs.
Mica
Although considered a brownfield development, the Pompano facility acts as a production hub to nearby fields.
Located on Mississippi Canyon Blocks 167 and 211 in 4,350 feet (1,326 meters) of water, Mica is approximately 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Mobile Bay. Holding an estimated 100 MMboe in recoverable reserves, Mica was one of the GOM's first fields to be developed with reservoirs located entirely below a layer of salt. A 1997 gas-production test set an industry record for its water depth of 4,247 feet (1,295 meters).
ExxonMobil serves as operator of Mica with 50% interest, and Stone Energy holds the remaining 50%.
Situated 29 miles (47 kilometers) northwest of the Pompano facility, Mica was developed as a satellite field to existing Pompano facilities. In a $330 million project, the Mica subsea template accommodates four subsea wells that are tied via flowlines to the Pompano production platform. Developed in two phases by FMC Technologies, production was first achieved through two production wells. Two additional production wells were later tied-in to the subsea development.
The subsea development included two 29-mile (47-kilometer) flowlines: one for oil and the other for gas. Intec Engineering provided engineering for the production flowlines, including the preliminary and detailed engineering from the manifold to the risers.
Commencing production on August 17, 2001, Mica has a plateau production of 150 MMcf/d (4.2 MMcm/d) and 15,000 bopd. The field's length of tie-back and water depth set a world record for deepwater subsea development at the time.
MC 72
Additionally, LLOG Exploration developed a discovery through the Pompano facility. Located in Mississippi Canyon 72, the MC 72 #1 discovery well drilled by the Ocean America semisub penetrated a gas-filled sand column measuring more than 100 feet (30 meters) in January 2008.
LLOG awarded FMC Technologies the development contract. The work scope for FMC includes the fabrication and installation of the subsea production system, engineering and life-of-field services on the field.
Future Tie-Back Opportunities
Additionally, future exploration programs nearby may help to boost Pompano production through satellite subsea tie-backs. Project partners report that they receive regular inquiries into the potential of producing third-party fields.
