Project Description
Transocean's semisub, Deepwater Horizon, discovered the Tubular Bells prospect on Mississippi Canyon Block 725, roughly 135 miles (217 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans. Hess serves as the operator of the field and owns a 57.14% working interest; Chevron owns the remaining 42.86% interest.

On Oct. 29, 2003, the discovery well was drilled to a depth of 31,131 feet (9,489 meters) in approximately 4,300 feet (1,311 meters) of water. The exploratory well found 190 feet (58 meters) of net oil pay. Following the Tubular Bells discovery, a successful appraisal well was drilled in 2006 and encountered hydrocarbons 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the initial well.

BP hired Ocean Confidence, a semisubmersible, to drill two sidetrack wells to further delineate the field. A sidetrack well was completed in the first quarter of 2007, then a further appraisal well spudded in October of that same year.

Field Development

The development plan calls for three subsea production wells and two water injection wells, from two subsea drill centers, to connect to a third-party owned spar production facility. Development drilling should begin in 2012, and initial production is slated for 2014.

The field's annual gross production should peak in the range of 40,000-45,000 boep/d with total estimated recoverable resources for Tubular Bells estimated at more than 120 MMbbl of oil equivalent.

Hess awarded Williams Partners a letter to provide a floating-production system, Gulfstar FPS, for the development of the Tubular Bells field.

Williams Partners will design, construct and install its Gulfstar FPS with a capacity of 60,000 bopd of oil and up to 200 MMcf/d of natural gas, and have the capability to provide seawater injection services. The facility is a spar-based floating production system that utilizes traditional three-level topsides mated to a classic spar hull.

McDermott Awarded Spar Hull Installation Contract for Tubular Bells
Type: Facility Construction

Aug. 2012 - McDermott International announced that one of its subsidiaries received a contract by Williams Partners for transportation and installation services for a spar hull in the Gulf of Mexico. The company will transport and install the Gulfstar FPS GS-1 spar hull and moorings. The spar platform will be moored on the Tubular Bells development, situated about 150 miles (241 kilometers) offshore, on Mississippi Canyon Block 683 and 726 in a water depth of 4,200 feet (1,280 meters). McDermott's DB50 vessel will install the moorings before transporting the classic-design spar hull to the installation site where it will be upended and ballasted before installing a temporary work deck. The offshore campaign is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2013.

ClampOn to Provide Detectors for Tubular Bells Project
Type: Subsea Equipment

May. 2012 - ClampOn will supply multiple subsea acoustic sand vibration detectors and PIG detectors for the Tubular Bells project. The development is slated for production in 4Q 2014.

Technip to Install Subsea Equipment for Tubular Bells Development
Type: Subsea Equipment

Feb. 2012 - Hess Corporation has awarded Technip a lump sum contract for the development of the Tubular Bells field in the GOM. The contract covers the design, engineering, fabrication and subsea installation of more than 28 miles (45 kilometers) of flowlines, steel catenary risers, pipeline end terminations, piles and structures. Offshore installation is scheduled for completion during the first half of 2013.

Alliance Engineering to Construct Topside, Deck for Tubular Bells FPS
Type: Facility Construction

Jan. 2012 - Wood Group's Alliance Engineering received a detailed engineering and design contract of the topside facilities and deck, for Williams Partners' Gulfstar FPS spar production platform. The platform, for installation in Mississippi Canyon Block 768, will produce oil and gas from the Tubular Bells field. The Gulfstar spar platform will be located in 4,300 feet (1,311 meters) of water and designed to process 60,000 bopd and 200 MMcf/d. The single-lift topsides will have three deck levels and include processing equipment, seawater injection equipment, utilities, an accommodation building with helideck, and pumping and compression equipment to export the treated oil and gas through departing pipelines. The completed deck will weigh approximately 7,000 short tons. Initial production is scheduled to commence in 2014.

Williams Partners Sign Agreements for Gulfstar FPS
Type: Facility Construction

Oct. 2011 - Williams Partners have signed several agreements with Hess and Chevron to provide production handling, export pipeline, oil and gas gathering and gas processing services in the Tubular Bells field development. As previously reported in May 2011, Hess will use Williams Partners' proprietary floating production system Gulfstar FPS. The vessel will be capable of serving as a central host facility for other deepwater prospects in the area. Williams Partners will design, construct and install its Gulfstar FPS with a capacity of 60,000 bopd, up to 200 MMcf/d, and the capability to provide seawater injection services. The facility is a spar-based FPS that will utilize traditional three-level topsides mated to a classic spar hull. Gulfstar FPS is scheduled for delivery in 30 months. The Tubular Bells field is located on Mississippi Canyon Blocks 633 and 726 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Hess operates the development, holding a 42.86 percent interest.

Hess Sanctions Tubular Bells Development
Type: Development Activity

Oct. 2011 - Hess will begin developing the deepwater oil and gas field, Tubular Bells, in the Gulf of Mexico. The development plan calls for three subsea production wells and two water injection wells from two subsea drill centers, which will be connected to a third-party owned spar production facility (this spar facility is the first of its kind constructed entirely in the United States). Drilling should begin in 2012, and initial production is slated for 2014. Hess states that annual gross production should peak at about 40,000-45,000 boepd. Total recoverable resources for Tubular Bells are estimated at more than 120 MMbbl of oil equivalent. Hess expects to spend about US $2.3 billion for development, with additional commitments for production handling, export pipeline, and oil and gas gathering and processing services. Hess holds a 57.14 percent operating interest in the field, and Chevron holds the remaining 42.86 percent interest.

Hess Contracts Williams Partners for Tubular Bells FPS
Type: Facility Construction

May. 2011 - Hess Corporation awarded Williams Partners a letter to provide production handling services at Tubular Bells field development in the Gulf of Mexico. Hess will utilize the company's proprietary floating-production system, Gulfstar FPS, which may serve as a central host for other operations in the deepwater area. This standard design approach will allow customers to reduce their cycle time from discovery to first oil, stated Williams Partners. The company has issued a letter of award to Gulf Island Fabrication Inc., through its subsidiary Gulf Marine Fabricators, to construct the hull portion of the Gulfstar FPS. Williams Partners expects to select and award the topsides portion of the Gulfstar FPS to a Gulf Coast fabricator, making this the first spar-based floating production system to be built entirely in the U.S. Gulf Coast area. The Tubular Bells field is located on Mississippi Canyon Blocks 633 and 726 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Hess operates the development, holding a 40% interest.
