The Forties field is situated on the UK Block 21/10 in a water depth of 106 meters, 112 miles (180 kilometers) from Aberdeen. Apache North Sea Limited holds a 97.14% interest of the field and serves as the operator; Esso Exploration and Production UK Limited holds 2.61%; and Shell U.K. Limited holds the remaining .25%. Apache acquired the Forties field from BP in 2003 at an estimated cost of $1.3 billion.
Forties was found in 1970 when an exploration well encountered hydrocarbons in Paleocene sandstone within an anticline structure. Following the discovery, BP appraised the area and drilled an additional four wells at a depth of roughly 6,500 feet (2,000 meters), which confirmed the largest oil accumulation ever discovered in the North Sea.
The field's reservoir occurs in thick Late Paleocene sandstones deposited in two major sand-rich submarine fan sequences.
The oil field is the largest discovery made on the UK Continental Shelf with an estimated total of 2.8 billion barrels of oil currently expected from recovery. Production of the Forties field commenced in September 1975 and the field has been in operation for 33 years. In 1978, the field reached a peak plateau rate of 520,000 bopd.
Field Development
The Forties field consists of 103 wells, 81 producers and 22 injectors, tied-back to five platforms, Forties Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Echo.
Forties Charlie acts as the field's central hub for all production, as well as for a number of other UK fields in the immediate area. The facility then exports the oil via a 36-inch BP FPS export pipeline to Cruden Bay via the Forties Unity Riser Platform. The Forties Unity remains under BP ownership.
The Alpha, Charlie and Delta platforms have separation and processing facilities; the Bravo platform was converted from oil to direct exportation; and the Echo platform does not have separation facilities. Several infield pipelines connect the facilities to each other and then to the Unity Riser Platform.
Field Upgrades
Once Apache gained ownership of the field, the company analyzed the area and sought ways to upgrade the field to produce for several more decades. The upgraded the field's facilities by including new generators with electric generating capacity, adding a new "ring main" to distribute gas and power throughout the field, adding new cranes, modernizing four of the platform's drilling rigs, and adding new electric oil export pumps.
The operator also re-injected more water into the field, added additional high-pressure gas-lift systems, and updated control equipment on each platform. With the improved efficiency and additional development drilling throughout the area, Apache has since doubled the field's production.
Apache has drilled more than 30 wells on the Forties field since 2003, and plans to drill in additional 20 locations in order to prolong the field's life expectancy for another 20 years. Seismic data and well logs indicate that the field holds an estimated 5 billion barrels of oil-in-place, than previously estimated, which has encouraged the drilling.
Satellite Field
Bacchus
The Bacchus field is located on Block 22/06a in the Central North Sea. Apache operates the block with a 70% interest; while Endeavour holds the remaining interest.
Field development plans included three wells connecting to the Forties Alpha platform. Estimated to hold 18 MMboe of P50 Reserves, Bacchus came online in April 2012.

Tonto Begins Paying Off for Apache
Type: Production Start
May. 2013 - Production from Apache's 100-percent-owned Tonto oil field in the UK North Sea began April 24, 2013. The Tonto-1 well was brought on stream at an initial rate of 10,346 bopd. Tonto-1 was drilled as a deviated well from the Forties Bravo platform and encountered 62 feet of net oil pay in Eocene sandstone. This was followed by a horizontal completion lateral that logged 243 feet of net oil pay. The Tonto reservoir lies above the Paleocene Forties reservoir and was penetrated several times while drilling Forties development wells. Apache plans to drill an additional development well before the end of 2013.

Second Well at Bacchus Comes Online, Increases Production
Type: Development Activity
Aug. 2012 - Apache has completed a horizontal well on the Bacchus field which has increased production to 12,900 bopd. The well, Bacchus West, penetrated Jurassic-aged Fulmar reservoir sandstones and logged 889 feet (271 meters) of net pay in three sections. The well currently is producing about 8,500 barrels of oil per day. The first well on the field, Bacchus South, commenced production in May 2012 and reached levels of about 6,000 bopd. Currently the well is producing nearly 4,400 barrels per day. Bacchus is subsea tied-back to the Forties Alpha platform. The Rowan Gorilla VII (450' ILC) jackup will relocate to the Aviat shallow gas discovery for appraisal drilling.

Apache Completes two wells at Forties, Increases Daily Output
Type: Status Update
Jul. 2011 - Apache has completed two development wells, Charlie 4-3 and Delta 3-5 at the Forties field in the UK sector of the North Sea. Well Charlie 4-3 commenced production at a rate of 12,567 bopd while Delta 3-5 is flowing oil at a rate of 8,781 bopd. When Apache acquired Forties in 2003, the field was producing 40,000 bopd. With the onset of these new wells, total daily production rates have reached a high rate of 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent, even with production constraints due to construction projects and temporary pipeline closures, stated the operator. Apache expects the availability of maximum transmission capacity during the third quarter of 2011, as planned repair and maintenance work is completed and the Bravo pipeline comes back online. Apache holds a 97.14% interest in the Forties field.

OGN Group Selected to Build Satellite Platform for Forties Field
Type: Status Update
Nov. 2010 - OGN Group was selected by Apache to build a new satellite oil production platform for the UK Forties field. The platform will be bridge-linked to the existing Forties Alpha installation. "This project will provide Apache with 18 new slots for drilling additional development wells to increase the ultimate recovery from the prolific Forties field, the largest hydrocarbon discovery in the UK sector of the North Sea," stated Apache. The operator recently completed and processed time-lapse 4D seismic surveys at the field and along with the additional drilling slots, the outlook is to maintain daily oil production at a rate of 60,000 bopd during the subsequent three-plus years, noted the operator. The satellite platform will expand critical utility services to the field, including power generation, produced fluid processing, high-pressure gas compression for artificial lift, and dehydration. The platform's construction is scheduled for completion by mid-year 2012. The platform will then be towed and installed at the Forties field.
