Project Description
Red Hawk is a deepwater gas field located in the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of Sabine Pass, Texas in a water depth of 5,300 feet (1,615 meters). Situated on Garden Banks Block 877, the well was discovered in August 2001. The reservoirs are located in three upper Pliocene and contain more than 100 feet of high-quality sand.

With an estimated resource base of 250 billion cubic feet of natural gas, production is estimated to hit 120 MMcf/d (3 MMcm/d). Anadarko (operator) and Devon equally hold 50% interests in Red Hawk.

Production commenced on the Red Hawk field July 19, 2004 from two subsea wells.

Production commenced on the Red Hawk field July 19, 2004 from two subsea wells.

Red Hawk platform

When Red Hawk was constructed, this floating production facility was considered the deepest field development, moored in 5,300 feet (1,615 meters) of water. Consisting of two subsea systems tied-back, this facility achieved first production within 24 months of project sanction. Red Hawk was designed as a host structure for cost-effective developments of nearby satellite fields.

Designed and constructed by Technip, Red Hawk is the first wet tree-only spar; previously all spars have primarily been dry tree facilities. The spar has six 20-foot diameter tubes wrapped around a seventh 20-foot diameter tube, all connected by structural steel. The unit is 64 feet (20 meters) in diameter, which makes it smaller than previous units. Three outer cylinders extend the full 560-foot length of the spar, while the other three are only 280 feet (85 meters). The cylinders are connected by four heave plates spaced about 70 feet (21 meters) apart and are used to dampen the vertical movement.

The unit is very similar to the classic spar. It was wet towed to site, and the hard tank was flooded to upend in about five minutes after free flooding was initiated. The cell spar supports a topside payload of 4,400 tons (3,992 tonnes). The facility is designed to initially produce 120 MMcf/d (3 MMcm/d) with the potential to add gas production up to 300 MMcf/d (8 MMcm/d), as well as add the capacity to produce 20,000 bopd of oil in the future.

Production flows via two sets of incoming production risers that runs from the seafloor to the topsides through interstitial spaces between seven cylinders. El Paso Energy Partners built and operated a 16-inch, 86-mile pipeline, Phoenix Gas Gathering, to gather natural gas production from the Red Hawk field.

Transocean's Discoverer Spirit Spuds Development Well at Red Hawk
Type: Status Update

Apr. 2009 - The Transocean Discoverer Spirit spudded a development well at the Red Hawk field located at Garden Banks Block 877. According to RigLogix, the drillship started drilling at the end of March 2009. The DOCD submitted by Anadarko for development activites consists of installing lease term pipelines and umbilicals, and the hook-up of well #003. Andarko is the operator and holds a 50% interest in the field, with Devon holding the remaining 50% interest.

Discoverer Spirit Scheduled For Development Activities at Red Hawk
Type: Development Activity

Mar. 2009 - Kerr-McGee filed a Supplemental DOCD with the MMS for development operations at Red Hawk field. Red Hawk is located on Garden Banks Block 877 in more than 5,300 feet of water. The plan includes installing four lease term pipelines and umbilical, and hook-up of well #003. Kerr-McGee has requested that the MMS expedite this plan due to rig availability. The Discoverer Spirit is scheduled to commence operations in late February 2009.

Kerr-McGee Restarts Red Hawk Platform
Type: Status Update

Apr. 2006 - Kerr-McGee Corp. (KMG) says it has begun to restart the Red Hawk platform in the Gulf of Mexico, which has been idled since Hurricane Katrina last August. The company said it initiated reduced natural gas production in the past couple days and should be fully operational in coming weeks.

Red Hawk Begins Production On Schedule
Type: Production Start

Jul. 2004 - Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp., a wholly owned affiliate of Kerr-McGee Corp. , today announced that the Red Hawk field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico achieved first production on schedule using the world's first cell spar facility. Red Hawk, Kerr-McGee's deepest development to date located in 5,300 feet of water on Garden Banks 877, started production from the first of its two subsea wells just 24 months after sanctioning. Kerr-McGee operates Red Hawk with a 50% interest. Devon Energy Corp. owns the remaining 50% interest.

MMS Approves Use of Cell Spar Technology
Type: Status Update

Jan. 2003 - The Minerals Management Service has granted broad approval for use of the world's first cell spar in a deepwater oil and gas project. The approval came as part of a Conceptual Deepwater Operations Plans (DWOP) review of Kerr-McGee's "Red Hawk" project. The project will be located in 5,300 feet of water. Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp. operates Red Hawk with 50 percent interest, and Ocean Energy holds the remaining 50 percent.

Kerr-McGee's Drilling Program on Track
Type: Status Update

Dec. 2002 - Kerr-McGee is rigging up to spud an additional exploratory well on Garden Banks 877. This planned 18,300-foot well will test the potential up-dip extension of the reservoirs encountered at the Red Hawk field. The Red Hawk field, with current estimated proven reserves greater than 250 Bcfe, is being developed with the world's first cell spar. Production from Red Hawk is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2004. Kerr-McGee operates the Red Hawk area with 50% working interest, and Ocean holds the remaining 50%.
