Matterhorn mini-TLP

Matterhorn field development encompasses a mini-Tension Leg Platform with nine well slots and production capacities of 35,000 bopd of oil, 55 MMcf/d. The Matterhorn mini-TLP, located in 2,788 feet of water (850 meters,) is on block Mississippi Canyon 243. Thirty miles southeast of the Mississippi River and 100 miles (161 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans, La., Matterhorn was 100% owned by Total E&P USA. In January 2010, the company sold its interest to W&T Offshore.

The floating structure has a production capacity of 33,000 bopd of oil and more than 55 MMcf/d (1.55 MMcm/d) of natural gas. The TLP is an Altantia SeaStar design, previously designed and installed on three deepwater projects – Chevron’s Typhoon, and British Borneo’s Morpeth and Allegheny fields.

Matterhorn TLP fabrication began in January 2002 and was completed later that year. It is the largest mini-TLP built to date –- double the size of the previous units and the first design to incorporate dry trees –- weighing in at 5,500 tons (4,990 tonnes). It is also the first unit to incorporate supporting vertical access production flow lines running through the central moon pool.

The hull measures 84 feet (26 meters) in diameter and 125 feet (38 meters) in height. The platform is capable of carrying nine top-tensioned production risers, seven of which were installed on the platform during commissioning. At the base of the column are three pontoons, which give the structure an effective radius of 179 feet (55 meters). Where they attach to the main column, the pontoon heights are 4 feet (1 meter) but taper up to 27 feet (8 meters) at the tip. It is designed to support a payload of 8,425 tons (7,643 tonnes).

Gulf Marine Fabricators and Pragon Engineering contributed to the deck construction and the design of the topside facilities, respectively.

Satellite Fields

Mandy

The Mandy field is located on Mississippi Canyon Block 199 in a water depth of 2,465 feet (751 meters) in the Gulf of Mexico. LLOG operates the prospect and holds a 50% interest; Mariner holds 35%; and Apache holds the remaining 15% interest.

An EP was submitted to MMS proposing to drill and test well locations A, B and C. Shortly after, a supplemental EP was filed proposing to re-enter and complete an existing well, No. 001, in addition to the other operations that will be performed on the prospect.

A discovery was made at the Mandy prospect. Drilled by the Noble Lorris Bouzigard semisub in 2,465 feet (751 meters) of water, the discovery was drilled to a total vertical depth of roughly 7,500 feet (2,286 meters). The well encountered 120 feet (37 meters) of net oil pay, which was confirmed by RCI pressures and samples, in a highly quality oil-filled reservoir. A second well was drilled on Mandy in a separate fault block and also found a high quality oil-filled reservoir with more than 100 feet (30 meters) of net TVD oil pay.

The operator has since completed three wells which are being tied-back through a subsea manifold to the Matterhorn TLP. Projected start-up from the development is 4Q 2011.

W&T Updates Matterhorn Development Ops
Type: Operator Update

May. 2013 - W&T Offshore is in the process of drilling a sidetrack to the A-2 well in Mississippi Canyon 243. The well is being drilled to replace a well that sanded-up in 4Q 2012. The company plans to drill the A-5 injection well later in 2013 to extend the productive life of the field and sweep oil to the A-2 well bore. If A-5 is successful, W&T may consider undertaking a similar project in the western part of the field.

W&T Completes Development Wells at Matterhorn
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2012 - W&T Offshore reported that the A-4 ST at the Matterhorn field began producing approximately 3,190 boepd net in mid-June and the A-13 at Mahogany began producing approximately 1,640 boepd net in late May. During the second quarter, the company commenced drilling the A-5 ST well at Mahogany, and is now currently completing the well. W&T expects to bring the A-5 ST online later this week with projected initial production rates of approximately 925 boepd net to the company. Following the A-5 ST well at Mahogany, the company expects to drill the A-9 ST development well to further develop the P sand south of the A-5 ST during the third quarter. Following the A-9 ST well, W&T anticipates moving to another development drill well for a possible spud date in the fourth quarter followed by completion in early 2013.
