The five fields contain estimated recoverable reserves of 400 million barrels of heavy crude oil, and were declared commercially viable in December 2005. The first phase of the project commenced production on July 13, 2009.

Field Development

The Parque das Conchas project is the first time field development incorporated subsea oil and gas separation and subsea pumping.

During two development phases, the fields were developed by 13 wells tied-back to the centrally located Espirito Santo FPSO, moored in 5,840 feet (1,780 meters) of water. The first phase developed four fields, and the second phase will develop the fifth field.

FMC Technologies provided the subsea completion and processing systems for the project. The scope of work included 10 subsea trees, four subsea manifolds, six subsea boosting and separation systems, and related subsea equipment. Global Santa Fe's Arctic 1 semisub performed the development drilling.

Oceaneering International provided the hybrid subsea pump and 31-mile-long (50-kilometer-long) steel tube production control umbilicals. The use of steel tube hydraulics and multi-circuit high power umbilicals, which deliver power to 1,500 horsepower pumps on the sea floor, is an industry first.

Subsea 7 installed 10 steel pipelines roughly 68 miles (109 kilometers) long, as well as the fabrication and installation of six, 11-mile-long (18-kilometer-long) lazy-wave steel risers. The company also installed three dynamic and two static umbilicals, four manifolds, and the fabrication and installation of 25 rigid jumpers.

The double-hulled Espirito Santo FPSO has significant power and heat delivery systems to drive the system and process heavy crude oil. With a production capacity of 100,000 boepd, the Espirito Santo facility will process heavy crudes that range from 16 to 24 degrees API.

InterMoor Completes Conductor Fabrication, Installation Proj. for Shell
Type: Subsea Equipment

Jun. 2012 - InterMoor has completed the installation of the electrical submersible pump conductors for the artificial lift manifold as part of the Shell BC-10 phase two project. InterMoor was responsible for the fabrication and installation of four conductors in addition to one spare conductor for the project. Weighing in at more than 70 metric tons, the conductors measured 48 inches in diameter and 197 feet (60 meters) long with a 1.5-inch wall. The conductors were installed in water depths up to 5,600 feet (1,707 meters) off the coast of Brazil in the northern Campos Basin.

Shell Shuts-In Abalone Field
Type: Status Update

Jun. 2011 - Shell has shut down production at the Abalone field indefinitely; and the company does not have a forecast for when activity at the field will resume. Repairs will be made to the subsea equipment at the field, Shell said. The field could be shut in until January 2013.

Oceaneering to Supply Umbilicals for BC-10 Project

Nov. 2010 - Shell contracted Oceaneering International to supply umbilicals for the development of the BC-10 Phase II project. The order includes hybrid subsea pump and steel tube production control umbilicals totaling about 19 miles (30 kilometers) in length and associated hydraulic flying leads. These umbilicals will be used to support subsea development of the Argonauta O-North field, consisting of seven production and four injection wells in water depths ranging from 4,900 to 6,500 feet (1,494 to 1,981 meters). The project is situated 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of the city of Vitoria. Shell serves as the operator of the project and holds a 50% working interest; Petrobras holds 35%; and ONGC holds the remaining 15%.

FMC to Supply Subsea Trees for BC-10 Project
Type: Contract Award

Oct. 2010 - Shell received a contract from FMC Technologies for the supply of 11 subsea trees rated at 10,000 psi and two production manifolds for the Parque das Conchas Phase II project. The company will also supply an artificial lift manifold containing four subsea gas/liquid separation and boosting modules, as well as related subsea controls. The subsea system will be engineered and manufactured at FMC's facility in Rio de Janeiro. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for 2012.
