Project Description
The Draugen oil and gas field lies on Block 6407/9 in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea in the Haltenbanken oil and gas province. The field is situated 93 miles (150 kilometers) off the coast of Norway in water depths of 787 to 919 feet (240 to 280 meters).

Shell serves as the operator of the field, holding a 26.20% interest; BP Norge AS holds 18.36%; Chevron Norge holds 7.56%; Petoro AS holds 47.88%.

Discovered in 1984 by well 6407/9-1, the field was then delineated by four appraisal wells a year later, followed by a sixth appraisal well in 1986. Lying at a depth of 5,249 feet (1,600 meters), the main reservoir has an oil column of 131 feet (40 meters). At the time, it was estimated Draugen held 400 million barrels of oil at discovery.

Plans for development initially called for six oil producers and six subsea water injectors connecting to a concrete gravity base structure. In October 1993, Draugen started production from one horizontal well.

Several years later, investments were made to extend the life of Draugen until 2024. The program involved both in-fill drilling on the main reservoir, and the development of fresh reserves discovered at the Garn West and Rogn South reservoirs. The Rogn and Garn deposits are homogeneous and both lie at a depth of 5,413 feet (1,650 meters). Reserves of the field were then increased to an estimated 700 million barrels of recoverable reserves.

Field Development

Re-development of Draugen first focused on Garn West, calling for two production wells tied-back to the Draugen platform by a 2-mile-long (3-kilometer-long) pipeline. Production from this section came online in 2001.

Rogn South followed, calling for three additional producers, tied-back via a 6-mile-long (9-kilometer-long) pipeline. In addition to the production wells, there are two subsea producers, both to the south of the platform. Reservoir pressure is maintained by the injection of filtered seawater through five additional subsea wells. An eighth subsea well was then drilled for use as a gas injector. This part of the field came online in 2003.

Installed in 1993, and commencing production during that same year, the Draugen platform has a production capacity of 140,000 bopd. Stabilized oil is stored in tanks in the base of the facility, and two pipelines transport the oil from the facility to a floating loading buoy to be exported.

Further exploration

Several additional measures have been evaluated to increase oil recovery of the field. Based on a 4D seismic survey carried out in 2009, the potential of new wells on the field is being assessed.

Status Updates
BP Sells Stake in Draugen
Type: Operator Update

Sep. 2012 - BP has announced it reached an agreement to sell its 18.36% stake in Draugen Field in the Norwegian Sea to Norske Shell for $240 million. The deal, subject to regulatory approval, should be completed by the end of the year. BP's net production from the Shell-operated Draugen field averages 6,000 barrels per day. Since 2010, BP has entered into agreements to sell assets valued at $33 billion. In an effort to focus more on growth opportunities and its core business strengths BP expects to divest $38 billion in assets between 2010 and 2013.

Shell Awards Contract to Framo Engineering for Draugen Field
Type: Facility Construction

Aug. 2012 - A/S Norske Shell has awarded a $100 million contract to Framo Engineering to supply its Draugen field with a complete subsea, multiphase booster pump system which includes topside power and control, power and control umbilical and the complete subsea pump module and manifold. Framo, a Schlumberger company, will install the system in Norwegian waters at a depth of 8,202 feet (250 meters). The system is designed to facilitate increased oil production in the Draugen field and will be installed in the summer of 2014.

Hertel Offshore Signs EPC Contract for Draugen Platform
Type: Status Update

Jun. 2012 - Hertel Offshore has signed a contract for the EPC delivery of the Shell Draugen Additional Living Quarter, which will accommodate 44 people and will be designed according to the Norsok standards. Work has commenced and delivery of the module is scheduled for May 2013. Construction will be done at the Hertel Offshore premises in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Shell Grants EPCI Contract for Draugen Field
Type: Status Update

Apr. 2012 - Shell and Ocean Installer have signed a Letter of Intent for the development of the Draugen field. The contract covers the EPCI services for further development of the subsea infrastructure at the Draugen field, in the context of Shell drilling four infill wells for the purpose of increasing the ultimate recovery factor and accelerating oil production at the field. Ocean Installer will be responsible for all phases of the operation, from planning and engineering to installation and establishment of connections. This includes: procurement and installation of approximately 11.5 miles (18.5 kilometers) oil production and gas lift flexible flowlines and jumpers including pull-in to the Draugen platform, installation of approximately 13-mile-long (21-kilometer-long) umbilicals including pull-in to the Draugen platform; procurement and installation of a T-manifold and protection covers; supply of rock dump; and detailed engineering. The project is expected to start-up immediately and is planned for completion in 2014.

Aker to Deliver Subsea Connection System for Draugen Project
Type: Development Activity

Mar. 2012 - Aker Solutions received a contract from Shell to deliver subsea connection systems for the Draugen field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The scope of work includes the delivery of complete tie-in connection systems for production flowlines and umbilicals for the expansion of the Draugen field. Management, engineering and procurement of the connection systems will be performed at Aker Solutions' head office in Fornebu, Norway. Equipment deliveries will be made from 2012 to 2013.

Shell to Perform Workover Ops in Draugen Field

Shell Gets OK to Replace Draugen FLP
Type: Facility Construction

Apr. 2009 - Shell will reconstruct Draugen's FLP facility on the Draugen field. The new FLP will not be visible on the surface, it will be submerged and float in the water column, which is to be installed in 2010. Both the old and new FLPs are loading devices, with no interim oil storage. The present FLP has been in operation since 1993, and is connected to the Draugen field by pipelines.
