World-Record Holder

The appraisal drilling was completed when Glomar Explorer drilled the Atlantis-3 well to 18,760 feet (5,718 meters), and discovered hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs, confirming earlier drilling discoveries on the Atlantis field.

Development of Atlantis includes 16 producing wells and four injectors. A world-record holder, the field is being developed by the deepest moored semisubmersible platform in the world, a Production Quarters facility weighing in at 64,706 tons (58,700 tonnes). A semisubmersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) supports the semisubmersible platform. The MODU allows BP to re-enter wells as needed and provides flexibility in choosing well locations.

Company Contracts

In November 2000, BP awarded $1 billion in fabrication and installation contracts to J. Ray McDermott and Heerema Marine. BP awarded J. Ray a $600 million contract to provide fabrication of the 15,450-ton (14,016-tonnes) topside facilities, which was completed in May 2005.

Heerema Marine was contracted for the installation of facilities and associated pipelines and gathering lines, which was completed in 2007. The $400 million contract also called for the use of two Heerema Marine vessels, the Deepwater Construction Vessel (DCV) Balder and the DCV Thialf.

In January 2003, Bardex Corporation entered into a contract with BP to provide the hydraulic linear chain jack mooring system on the combined floating production/quarters (PQ) topsides with semisubmersible hull facility.

In November 2006, FMC Technologies entered into an agreement with BP to provide subsea trees, controls, manifolds and connection systems for the Atlantis, Thunder Horse and Na Kika fields. The agreement covered a period of 10 years.

In October 2007, Subsea 7 was awarded a $30 million contract with BP for the installation of the 26-mile (42-kilometer) umbilicals with options for flying leads.

Companies such as Duffy & McGovern, Impact Weather Inc. and Horizon Marine Inc. also entered into contracts with BP for the completion of the Atlantis field.

Production Begins

Production commenced at Atlantis in October 2007, and reached peak production by the end of 2008. Atlantis produces 200,000 bopd and 180 MMcf/d (5.10 MMcm/d).

Future development plans include additional wells being brought on board, while the Atlantis Field will continue to produce as expected until 2016.

Atlantis North Flank

The Atlantis North Flank is the first satellite field to be developed in the Atlantis North area. Located on Green Canyon Block 743 in 5,404 feet (1,647 meters) of water, the GC743 appraisal well, which was drilled in 2001, confirmed there is significant hydrocarbon pay in the area. Appraisal drilling encountered oil bearing sands with net pay in excess of 200 feet (61 meters). The find was followed by an additional appraisal well, a lateral sidetrack encountering hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs confirming resource characteristics from the previous well.

On June 4, 2009, the operator submitted a DOCD proposing to drill seven new wells and placing associated subsea connections needed to produce the new wells through the Atlantis semisub facility. Production will flow through new and existing subsea jumpers and pipeline structures to an existing drill center.

A phased development approach is being adopted at Atlantis North, with the first phase tie-back to the Atlantis production facility commencing by the end of 2009.
