Project Description
Located in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, the Gunnison oil and gas field spans Garden Banks Blocks 667, 668 and 669. Designed as a production hub for area fields, the Gunnison field development also produces the Durango and Deep Dawson discoveries. Anadarko serves as the operator of Gunnison with 50% interest, and partners on the project include Nexen with 30% and Helix ERT with 20%.

In May 2000, a discovery well on the Gunnison prospect in Garden Banks 668 intersected 275 feet (84 meters) of net hydrocarbon pay in three zones. The Noble Amos semisub drilled the discovery well to a total depth of 17,000 feet (5,182 meters) in 3,150 feet (960 meters) of water.

Appraisal drilling in 2001 significantly extended the field to the west. Drilled updip 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the discovery well, the Garden Banks 668 #2 appraisal well also confirmed the discovery. Suspended as a potential future producer, the appraisal well solidified the reserve estimate of more than 120 MMboe for the Gunnison area.

The third appraisal well, the Garden Banks 668 #3 well was drilled 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) west of the discovery well to further evaluate Gunnison and test the Durango prospect. The appraisal well hit more than 200 feet (61 meters) of net oil and gas pay. Drilled to confirm the commerciality of the field, the Garden Banks 668 #4 well was drilled by the Transocean Richardson soon afterward.

Durango

Situated in 3,150 feet (960 meters) of water, the Durango field is located on Garden Banks Block 667, directly adjacent to the Gunnison field. Discovered in June 2001 by the Transocean Richardson semisubmersible, the exploratory well encountered almost 200 feet (61 meters) of net gas pay, increasing the estimated reserves for the Gunnison sub-basin.

Durango is also operated by Anadarko, which holds 50% interest. Project partners are the same: Nexen with 30% and Helix ERT with the remaining 20%.

Gunnison Production Hub

Approved by project partners in October 2001, the Gunnison production hub develops area fields through the Global Producer VII truss spar. The total cost of development for the Gunnison project was less than $5 per barrel of oil equivalent, and the operating costs of the production hub is approximately $1.10 per barrel of oil equivalent.

A subsea innovation, the Gunnison development marked the world's first use of a flying lead deployment sled. Initially, six dry tree and three subsea wells on Gunnison and Durango were connected to the Global Producer VII. Awarded in February 2002, FMC was picked to supply the three enhanced horizontal subsea trees and 15 subsea wellhead systems, as well as associated equipment for the development. In November 2002, Wellstream was awarded the contract to supply the flexible flowlines, jumper and risers for the development.

In an effort to cut costs and speed up production start-up, the Global Producer VII truss spar is similar to the truss spars previously developed for the Nansen and Boomvang fields. Moored in waters greater than 3,100 feet deep (945 meters), the Global Producer VII is located on Garden Banks Block 668. With a daily production capacity of 40,000 bopd and 200 MMcf/d (5.7 MMcm/d) of natural gas, the Gunnison truss spar measures 549 feet (167 meters) long and 98 feet (30 meters) in diameter.

In November 2001, Gulf Island Fabrication was chosen to construct the topsides for the spar. CSO Aker Maritime was awarded the engineering, procurement and fabrication contract for the hull, associated moorings and riser system for the development.

In May 2002, Global Industries was chosen as a subcontractor by Williams to design, procure, install and commission approximately 95 miles (153 kilometers) of 18-inch-diameter pipeline, as well as a steel catenary riser. The pipeline will carry up to 88,000 bopd from the Global Producer VII and other area developments to a shallow-water platform in Galveston Block A244 for further exportation.

Production

Starting production in December 2003, ahead of schedule, the Global Producer VII ramped up to a peak production rate of 30,000 bopd and 180 MMcf/d (5 MMcm/d) of natural gas from the Gunnison and Durango fields.

With a production capacity of 40,000 bopd and 200 MMcf/d (5.7 MMcm/d), the Gunnison development was designed with an extra 25% capacity, leaving room for future growth and the potential to process third-party petroleum.

Dawson Deep

Situated 150 miles (241 kilometers) offshore Texas in 2,900 feet (884 meters) of water, Dawson Deep is located on Garden Banks Block 625, 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the Gunnison development.

Spudding on Dec. 12, 2003, initial drilling on the Dawson Deep field was not completed until after first production was reached on the Gunnison development. The Dawson Deep discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 24,450 feet (7,452 meters), encountering hydrocarbons. A sidetrack was then drilled down dip to appraise the discovery well.

Dawson Deep was developed as a single subsea tie-back to the Gunnison development. Production commenced from Dawson Deep in July 2006.

Anchor's Away: Delmar Installs New VLA
Type: Development Activity

Jan. 2008 - Delmar Systems, Inc. successfully installed the Gulf of Mexico's first gravity-installed vertical load anchor (VLA). The patented OMNI-Max anchor was installed at Anadarko's Garden Banks 667 location in late December 2007. The Anchor was deployed from the AHTS - Alex Chouest and penetrated the seabed. The Anchor was pull tested by the installation vessel and, with mooring line forerunner attached, abandoned on the seabed in the preset configuration. The anchor line was later connected to Diamond Offshore's MODU Ocean Star using Delmar's patented subsea mooring connector to connect the preset mooring line to the rig's self-contained mooring components. The installed OMNI-Max anchor complements the MODU's seven other self-contained/deployed conventional drag embedment anchors with attached mooring lines.
