The oil and gas field, long dogged by technical troubles, was approved for production by the UK government in 2001 - more than 24 years after it was discovered in 1977. Since its discovery, Clair is estimated to hold 5 billion barrels of oil, making it by far the biggest undeveloped resource in the UK Continental Shelf. However, exploration and development was on hold due to the cost of drilling and exploring the fractured nature of the rock Devonian sandstone that holds the oil.

BP and its partners twice rejected the plans to develop the field because of costs. Then in 1991, a new 3D seismic technology was cultivated showcasing the favorable sea floor conditions. Plus, the technology cut development costs from the traditional $8 a barrel to just $4.

Field

The first phase of the Clair development involved the recovery of oil and gas from the central area of the field; two appraisal wells were drilled in 1991.

The objective of the Phase 1 development was attained in early 2005 when first oil was achieved in February. BP and its co-ventures developed Phase 1 of the Clair oil and gas field at a cost of around $650 million. The three reservoirs, Core, Graben and Horst, have approximately 1.75 billion barrels worth of oil.

Presently, the field produces 60,000 bopd and 15 MMcf/d (.4 MMcm/d), a significant amount for the UK Continental Shelf.

Platform

The Clair platform is the first fixed platform to be installed on the UK's Atlantic margin.

The Clair development comprises a conventional platform with production and process topsides facilities supported by a fixed steel jacket. The jacket is a four-legged single steel structure that is 541 feet (165 meters) tall. The platform consists of 15 producing wells, eight water injectors and one drill cuttings reinjection well.

The platform facilities were installed offshore during the summer of 2004. Installation of the 11,700-ton (10,614-tonne) topsides, by a single lift, was one of the heaviest offshore lifts ever carried out in the UK Continental Shelf.

Both jacket and topsides were designed for fabrication, transportation and installation as single, fully integrated lifts that require access to the heaviest lift capability vessels on the installation market. Fabrication and integration of the deck was completed in 18 months by AMEC at the company's Wallsend yard near Newcastle. AMEC carried out the offshore hook-up of the installation. The 8,800-ton (7,983-tonne) four-legged steel jacket supporting the topsides was constructed at Aker Kvaerner's Verdal yard in Norway and was installed in the field in June 2004. Both the topsides and jacket were installed by Saipem's S7000 lift vessel.

Production

Oil from the field is exported to the Sullom Voe Terminal in Shetland via a 65-mile (105-kilometer), 22-inch diameter pipeline. Gas is exported through a 6.2-mile (10-kilometer), 6-inch diameter spur line into the Magnus Enhanced Oil Recovery trunk line.

Clair Ridge

The Clair Ridge project is the second phase of development of the Clair field, targeting the northern area. Field development plans call for several wells connecting to a platform consisting of two jackets connected by a bride with drilling and production facilities, as well as utilities and quarters.

Oil will export to Sullom Voe Terminal via a new pipeline tying into the existing Clair Phase One pipeline. Gas will export to Sullom Voe Terminal via a new pipeline tying into the West of Shetland Pipeline System.

In July 2010, Aker Solutions received an EPC contract for the delivery of two steel jackets for the project. Also included in the contract is load-out and sea fastening of the jackets and associated piles. The Drilling and Production jacket will have a total weight of 24,582 tons (22,300 tonnes), and the Quarter's Utility jacket will have a total weight of 9,921 tons (9,000 tonnes). Detailed engineering will start immediately, while fabrication in Verdal will commence in June 2011. Installation of the two platforms will commence in 2015 with first production expected in 2016. The new facilities will have an estimated production capacity of 640 MMbopd.

BP and Partners to Proceed with Greater Clair Appraisal
Type: Operator Update

Mar. 2013 - BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips and Chevron announced their decision to move forward with a two-year appraisal program designed to explore the possibility of developing the third phase of the Clair field west of the Shetland Islands. Five appraisal wells will be drilled initially. Depending upon the results from the five wells the program could be increased to between eight and twelve. The initial investment in the appraisal program will be more than $500 million.

Subsea 7 Awarded Work for BP's Clair Ridge Project
Type: Status Update

Feb. 2012 - BP granted Subsea 7 a contract for the Clair Ridge Project, west of Shetland. The Clair Ridge development will comprise two new bridge-linked platforms to be located in the northeast of Clair Phase 1. The contract scope includes the project management, engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation of a 3-mile-long (6 kilometer-long), 22-inch-diameter oil export pipeline and a 9-mile-long (14-kilometer-long), 6-inch-diameter gas export pipeline connected to the new production facilities and existing Clair Phase 1 export systems. The pipeline systems will allow production to be transported from Clair Ridge to Sullom Voe Terminal (SVT) via a dedicated gas export pipeline spur tied into the Clair Phase 1 pipeline. The associated gas will tie into the West of Shetland Pipeline System via the gas export pipeline. The scope also includes tie-ins of integrated subsea towhead structures, field testing and pre-commissioning activities. Offshore operations are due to commence in 2013.
