Project Description
The Espadarte field is located approximately 68 miles (110 kilometers) from the coast of Brazil in the Campos Basin. The field lies in a water depth range of 2,461 to 4,921 feet (750 to 1,500 meters) and covers 177,916 acres (720 square kilometers).

Initially discovered with the drilling of the 1-RJS-409 well in 1988, Espadarte's main block wasn't discovered until 1994. Owned and operated by Petrobras (100%), it is estimated that Espadarte holds 428 MMbo.

Field Development

Field development for Espadarte comprises of an FPSO and subsea wells. The Espadarte FPSO processes up to 100,000 bopd and 2.5 MMcf/d (70,792 Mcm/d), and has a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil. The vessel is 1,050 feet (320 meters) long, 177 feet (54 ...

Field Development

Field development for Espadarte comprises of an FPSO and subsea wells. The Espadarte FPSO processes up to 100,000 bopd and 2.5 MMcf/d (70,792 Mcm/d), and has a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil. The vessel is 1,050 feet (320 meters) long, 177 feet (54 meters) wide and 98 feet (30 meters) tall and is installed at a water depth of 4,429 feet (1,350 meters). The Espadarte FPSO is connected to nine subsea oil and natural gas wells and eight water-injecting wells.

Originally the FPSO VI, the vessel was refurbished and upgraded into the Espadarte FPSO at Keppel Shipyard. The project was considered one of the most complex conversions and was completed in a record time of 10.5 months. The contract required Keppel to remove all the existing oil processing utility equipment, and then install the new oil, water-and gas-production and treatment facilities on the main deck. Keppel reconditioned the boilers for the gas and diesel oil system, installed a flare tower, a helideck, supply handling deck cranes, foundations, walkways, lighting, communications, and utilities for various deck facilities.

It has several technological innovations aboard, among which is a new oil-pumping system developed by Petrobras. The underwater centrifuge pumping system assists in lifting oil from the field to the platform and is installed externally to the well on the seafloor.

Additionally, the internal turret, which stands at 98 feet (30 meters) high and 56 feet (17 meters) wide and has a gross weight of more than 1,000 tons (907 tonnes), accommodates up to 45 flexible risers, including umbilicals and electrical cables, ranging from 4 inches to 8 inches in diameter.

The contract to design and install the topside processing system was awarded to Gusto. The layout was based on 17 separate modules, located along a central pipe crack system. The modules were interconnected to form the complete oil, gas and water processing facilities.

Production commenced from Espadarte in August 2000, peaking in 2003 at 45,000 bopd. Leased from MODEC International, the Espadarte FPSO will be located on the field for 16 years.

A second phase of field development on the Espadarte field occurred in 2006. Nine wells (five producers and 4 injectors) are connected to a second FPSO, the Cidade do Rio de Janeiro. The FPSO's production went online in early January 2007.

Status Updates
First Production at Baleia Azul
Type: Production Start

Sep. 2012 - Petrobras has announced the start of oil production at the Baleia Azul presalt field in the offshore Campos Basin. First oil from the field is being pumped aboard the Cidade de Anchieta FPSO. The Cidade de Anchieta is one of two new production systems that Petrobras will put into operation in 2012. Initial production at Baleia Azul is a good sign for Petrobras whose oil production has taken a hit this year due to maintenance and unexpected shutdowns. The company has also announced plans to bring Bauna and Piracaba fields online in October. Petrobras holds a 100% stake in the fields.

Oceaneering to Supply Umbilicals for Whales Park Development
Type: Subsea Equipment

Apr. 2012 - Oceaneering International has secured a contract from Petrobras to supply nearly 85 miles (135 kilometers) of thermoplastic production control umbilicals for the Whales Park (formerly Baleia Azul) field development project offshore Brazil in the Espirito Santos Basin. Product manufacturing is slated to commence in 4Q 2012 and be completed in 4Q 2014.

SBM Offshore Continues with Espadarte FPSO Relocation Project
Type: Status Update

Mar. 2011 - SBM Offshore reported that engineering and procurement work is progressing for the relocation of the Espadarte FPSO to the Baleia Azul field offshore Brazil. The FPSO will disconnect from its current location later this year and towed to Singapore for the conversion and upgrade work, with first oil planned at Baleia Azul in 2012. The Baleia Azul field is situated in 4,265 feet (1,300 meters) of water, and is wholly owned and operated by Petrobras.

VWS to Supply Sulfate Reduction Equipment for P-58 FPSO
Type: Status Update

Sep. 2010 - VWS Westgarth, a division of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, received a contract from SBM Atlantia for sulfate reduction equipment for an FPSO installed on the Baleia Azul field. The contract awarded is for the design, supply, and delivery of a single-lift module seawater sulphate reduction package (SRP) system with a capacity of 126,000 bwpd. The system is designed to remove sulphates and other divalent ions from injected water in order to enhance oil recovery. The Baleia Azul field is situated in 4,265 feet (1,300 meters) of water offshore Brazil, and is wholly owned and operated by Petrobras.

Aker to Furnish Sulphate Removal Units for Two FPSOs in Brazil
Type: Contract Award

Mar. 2010 - Aker Solutions received a $41 million contract from Petrobras to supply sulphate removal systems with associated equipment. The systems will be installed on the topsides of the P-58 and P-62 FPSOs. The removal units will treat and de-sulphate seawater for injection into the reservoir to maintain pressure, and control scaling and scoring effects in the reservoir. Aker will also provide detailed engineering, procurement, and fabrication of major equipment, commissioning and start-up. Both FPSOs will have a production capacity of 180,000 bopd; P-58 will operate on the Parque das Baleias (Baleia Azul) field and P-62 will operate in module 4 of the Roncador field offshore Brazil. First oil is scheduled for 2014.

SBM Offshore to Lease FPSO Espadarte to Petrobras
Type: Status Update

Dec. 2009 - Petrobras signed a letter of intent with SBM Offshore for an FPSO for the Baleia Azul field, where first oil is expected in July 2012. Under the deal, SBM will lease and operate the existing Espadarte FPSO for 18 years on the Baleia Azul field offshore Brazil. The FPSO is currently on the Espadarte field; once it disconnects from this location in April 2011, it will then be modified and upgraded.

P-58 FPSO Conversion Underway
Type: Contract Award

Nov. 2009 - The P-58 FPSO is currently undergoing work for its conversion, including the vessel's structural and piping renewal, tank coating and upgrading of the accommodation. The FPSO will operate on the Baleia Azul field in the Parque das Baleias area, north of the Campos Basin. Oil production will come from 19 satellite wells connected individually to the unit. The FPSO will be moored in a water depth of 4,593 feet (1,400 meters), and will have a life expectancy of 25 years. Keppel Offshore received the $165 million contract for the pre-conversion of the FPSO on Nov. 25, 2009. The vessel is slated to commence production on the field in 2012.

DNV to Class Petrobras' P-58 FPSO Conversion
Type: Contract Award

May. 2009 - DNV signed a contract with Petrobras for classification services for a VLCC tanker conversion into an FPSO, to be named P-58. The vessel will operate on the Baleia Azul field in the Parque das Baleias area, north of the Campos Basin. Oil production will come from 19 satellite wells connected individually to the unit. The FPSO will be moored in a water depth of 1,400 meters, and will have a life expectancy of 25 years.
