Prior to the current interest holders acquiring the block, two oil discoveries were drilled, testing oil from two different sands of Early Cretaceous age. Drilled in 1991, the first well, 14/18-7, tested 847 bopd from roughly 289 feet (88 meters) of oil-bearing sands above water in a 570 foot (174 meter) sand interval. In 1996, a second well was drilled, 14/18-12, and tested 1,302 bopd from roughly 100 feet (30 meters) of sand. Both wells were plugged and abandoned.
A decade later, in September 2006, Ithaca Energy acquired the block and commenced exploratory drilling using the Bredford Dolphin semisub. The discovery well, 14/18b-15, was drilled at a 60-degree vertical angle, penetrating 632 feet (193 meters) of gross oil-bearing sandstones in the Upper Leek formation. After penetrating the interval, the well flowed at a rate of 1,330 bopd through a 28/64-inch choke.
A second well was drilled and tested, 14/18b-16, testing 28-degree API sweet oil, which flowed oil at a rate of 1,375 bopd. The well was directionally drilled to a bottom hole location 2,500 feet (762 meters) northeast of the No. 15 well, confirming the east extension of the field. The Upper Leek sandstone encountered 8,617 feet (2,626 meters) subsea, 291 feet (89 meters) high to the No. 15 well, testing at rates of up to 1,330 bopd. The appraisal well penetrated 426 feet (130 meter) of gross oil-bearing sandstones in the Upper Leek formation and a net pay interval of 115 feet (35 meters). The well flowed at a stable rate of 1,200 bopd through a 36/64-inch choke.
Following the success of the previous two wells, Ithaca decided to drill a third well, 14/18-17, which was drilled to a depth of 9,406 feet (2,867 meters) TVDSS. The appraisal well penetrated the Lower Cretaceous Leek sands at 8,842 feet (2,695 meters), 413 feet (126 meters) above the Athena oil water contact. Although it penetrated oil in the Leek Formation, it was of lower quality than found in the Athena reservoir, so the well was abandoned.
Ithaca directionally drilled another well, 14/18b-18, encountering 8,733 feet (2,662 meters) subsea. The 14/18b-18 well penetrated 447 feet (136 meters) of gross oil-bearing sandstones in the Upper Leek formation and a net pay interval of 129 feet (39 meters). The well flowed at a stable rate of 1,150 bopd through a 24/64-inch choke. Following the success of the three wells, the operator moved forward with development plans by awarding a FPSO contract to Bluewater in May 2008.
Field Development
These three wells, 14/18b-15, 14/18b-16 and 14/18-17, will be completed as production wells, followed by a fourth production well and one water injection well to be completed in the first quarter of 2011. Production will be sent via a subsea manifold through a 1-mile (two-kilometer), 8-inch-diameter flowline to a stand-alone FPSO, the Carmen FPSO, renamed BW Athena FPSO.
In May 2008, Bluewater entered into an agreement with Ithaca to modify and deploy the Usige Gorm FPSO to the Athena field in 2010.
Ithaca Energy and the Athena Joint Venture Partners approved the purchase of long lead equipment to initiate Athena's field development, and were made to purchase electrical submersible pumps, subsea trees and engineering support.
On Sept. 21, 2010, Ithaca Energy received Field Development Plan approval from the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change. Once approval was garnered, the consortium moved forward with development plans. Offshore installation work, including the deployment of the FPSO, is scheduled for completion by 1Q 2012.
First production occurred on May 28, 2012 with initial production rates anticipated at 10,000 boepd.
