Reindeer-Devil Creek Project Reindeer-Devil
Operator:Apache
Water Depth:65 m / 215 ft
Region:Australia
Country:Australia
Last Updated:Feb 28, 2012    (view update history)
Project Description
The Reindeer gas field is located in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia in waters measuring 62 meters within exploration permit WA-209-P. Apache Corporation, operator, holds a 55% operating interest, and Santos holds the remaining 45% interest.

First discovered in 1997, the field underwent development drilling in September 2008 when the Ensco 106 jackup drilled three development wells. A year later, the massive project was shelved in May 2009 after a key partner pulled out, but the US $800 million gas project was resurrected a month later. After receiving all the necessary governmental approvals, project construction commenced in September 2009.

Field Development

In August 2007, Santos commenced a FEED design for the project focusing on a development option consisting of an unmanned offshore platform with a pipeline connecting the platform to a new gas processing facility located onshore.

A year later, this proposed concept was accepted and the finalized plan consists of several wells connecting to an unmanned wellhead platform in 65 meters of water. Gas and liquids will be exported from the platform to a new onshore gas processing plant via a single 105-kilometer pipeline. The processing plant is located approximately 45 kilometers west of Karratha at Devil Creek, which will deliver sales gas and stabilized condensate.

Gas from the field is sent through a 65-mile offshore pipeline to the onshore facility at Devil Creek. The facility will have the capacity to process 210 MMcf/d. Production from the field commenced on Dec. 6, 2011.

With a life expectancy of 20 to 30 years, Reindeer is estimated to hold proven and probable reserves of 485 petajoules of gas sales and 1.6 million barrels of condensate.

Western Australian Premier Formally Opens Devil Creek Domestic Gas Project
Type: Status Update

Feb. 2012 - Apache Energy said that Premier of Western Australia and Minister for State Development, the Hon. Colin Barnett MLA has officially opened the Devil Creek gas plant. The development includes the Reindeer gas field, wellhead platform and raw gas pipeline, the Devil Creek gas plant and the Devil Creek sales gas export pipeline that ties into the Dampier to Bunbury Natural gas pipeline. The Devil Creek gas plant is a two-train facility designed to safely process 200 MMcf/d (220 Terajoules of gas per day) and 1,000 barrels per day of condensate. Also participating in the opening was the U.S. Ambassador to Australia, the Hon. Jeffrey Bleich, and the U.S. Consul General to Western Australia, Ms Aleisha Woodward. The Devil Creek Gas Plant is the state's third domestic natural gas processing hub and the first new domestic gas plant built in Western Australia for over 15 years.

Apache Brings Reindeer/Devil Creek Project Online
Type: Production Start

Dec. 2011 - Apache has commenced production from the Reindeer field in the Carnarvon Basin. The delivery of the gas is being processed at the new onshore Devil Creek plant near Karratha. The Reindeer/Devil Creek development includes the installation of an offshore unmanned wellhead platform in the Reindeer field, a 105-kilometer pipeline to shore and the development of the gas plant. The Devil Creek gas plant has a gross production capacity of 215 TJ/day and is initially planned to ramp up to sales of 120 TJ/day. The Reindeer gas field is located in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia in waters measuring 203 feet (62 meters) within exploration permit WA-209-P. Apache Corporation holds a 55 percent operating interest, and Santos holds the remaining 45 percent interest.

SapuraAcergy Aces Subsea Devt Contract for Devil Creek Project
Type: Contract Award

Oct. 2009 - Acergy was awarded a contract valued at $170 million to Apache Energy for the Devil Creek Development Project offshore Australia. The DCDP was initiated to recover and process the gas reserves from the Reindeer gas field located 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of the port of Dampier at a water depth of 197 feet (60 meters). SapuraAcergy's scope under the contract involves the transportation and installation of 57 miles (91 kilometers) of 16-inch-diameter rigid pipeline including a shallow water beach approach, subsea tie-in and stabilization works together with a wellhead platform of a 1,700 ton (1,542 tonnes) four leg jacket and a 450 ton (408 tonnes) topside processing module. Offshore installation is scheduled to commence in late 2010.

Reindeer Project to Reconvene with Production Commencing in Q211
Type: Status Update

Apr. 2009 - Santos signed an $585 million contract to supply natural gas to CITIC Pacific’s Sino Iron project in Western Australia. Under the contract, Santos will supply gas for seven years from the Reindeer gas project, located in the Carnarvon Basin offshore Australia, via a new offshore pipeline and onshore gas processing facility. Santos restarted the Reindeer project by awarding the EPF contract to Clough Engineering in early March. First gas is scheduled for the second half of 2011.
