Project Description
The Atla, formerly David, field is located about 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of the Heimdal field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Situated in Production License 102 C, the field is operated by Total, holding a 40% interest; Petoro holds 30%; Centrica Resources holds 20%; and Det norske holds the remaining 10%.

On October 18, 2010, Total made a gas/condensate discovery in well 25/5-7 on the David prospect. A gas column of about 230 feet (70 meters) was encountered in the Brent group (primary target) with better reservoir rocks and reservoir quality than expected. The Statfjord formation, the secondary target, has good reservoir properties, but with aquifers.

Preliminary estimates of the size of the discovery range between 2.4 and 3.2 million cubic meters of recoverable oil equivalents. Drilled by the Ocean Vanguard semisub, the well was not formation tested, but data was gathered.

Field Development

In June 2011, Total submitted a proposal for development and operation (PDO) for Atla field to the regulatory authorities. According to plan, the operator will use the exploration well as a production well, and attach it to a subsea installation that will tie-in to an existing pipeline between Heimdal and Skirne. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 12 MMbbl of oil equivalents.

Total Sees First Gas from Atla
Type: Production Start

Oct. 2012 - The subsea facilities at Total's Atla gas condensate field are now on stream. Atla was developed subsea with a tieback to existing infrastructure between the Skirne development and Heimdal production platform. In 2013 the field is expected to flow gas at an average rate of 14,000 boed and condensate at 2,500 bcpd. The fast-track project was brought on line within the planned schedule and budget two years after completion of exploration drilling. The field is located in production license 102C and sits in 390 feet of water.

Total Bringing Atla Online Soon
Type: Development Activity

Oct. 2012 - The 1.4 billion cubic meter-Atla gas and condensate field is expected to be brought on line in the first half of October according to Total, the field operator. Atla will be utilized via a subsea template tied back to an existing pipeline between the Skirne subsea facilities and the Heimdal Gas Center. The original exploration well was drilled into the Brent formation and is now being re-used as a production well.

Gas Leak at Heimdal Under Investigation
Type: Operator Update

May. 2012 - Statoil reported that a gas leak on the Heimdal platform, which occurred Saturday, May 26, is now under investigation internally and by Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority. The gas leak was detected during the testing of emergency shutdown valves. At the time of the leak, parts of the Heimdal installation were shutdown for maintenance. However, pressurized systems in areas not affected by the turnaround were still online. At the time of the incident, 98 workers were on board the platform; however, no injuries were reported. The emergency response team on board the platform and onshore were mobilized as standby vessels and helicopters were dispatched to the area. Personnel on board the Heimdal platform boarded lifeboats in accordance with emergency protocols, but later returned to work that afternoon. This serious incident has been initially classified as Red 1 and will be investigated internally by Development and Production Norway (DPN).

Total Gets Consent to Drill in PL 102 C
Type: Status Update

Jan. 2012 - Total has been granted consent for use of the Borgland Dolphin (mid-water semisub) for drilling and completion of a production well in Production License 102 C. The operator will drill well 25/5-D-1-H as a sidetrack, which lies in a water depth of 390 feet (119 meters). Drilling is expected to start in February.

Total to Fast-Track North Sea Atla Field
Type: Operator Update

Jul. 2011 - Total E&P Norge has submitted a proposal for development and operation (PDO) for the Atla field to the regulatory authorities. The operator discovered Atla, formerly David, in October 2010 when gas-condensate was proven in the Brent formation. According to the plan, the operator will use the exploration well as a production well, and attach it to a subsea installation that will tie-in to an existing pipeline between Heimdal and Skirne. Recoverable reserves are estimated at 12 MMbbl of oil equivalents. Atla lies in the central part of the North Sea, 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of the Heimdal field. Licensees in 102C are Total (operator, 40%), Petoro (30%), Centrica Resources (20%) and Det norske (10%).

Total Hits Gas Pay in North Sea
Type: New Discovery

Oct. 2010 - Total E&P Norge AS made a gas/condensate discovery in well 25/5-7 on the David prospect, located about 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of the Heimdal field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The partners in the license are considering connecting the discovery to the Heimdal field. Total, serving as operator of the license, holds a 40% interest; Petoro holds 30%; Centrica Resources holds 20%; and Det norske holds the remaining 10%.

Total Gets Green Light to Drill 25/5-7 Well
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2010 - The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has granted Total E&P Norge AS a permit to drill well 25/5-7 in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The well will be drilled from the Ocean Vanguard semisub in Production License 102 C, consisting of parts of Block 25/5. Total serves as the operator of the license, holding a 40% interest; Centrica Resources holds 20%; Petoro AS holds 30%; and Det norske holds the remaining 10% interest.

Total Gets Consent to Explore North Sea
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2010 - Total E&P Norge AS received consent to explore in the central part of the North Sea using the Ocean Vanguard semisub. The consent relates to the drilling of well 25/5-7 in Production License 102 C. Drilling should take about 45 to 90 days, depending on the scope of testing and the possible drilling of a sidetrack.
