Project Description
The Kitan field is situated approximately 100 miles (161 kilometers) off the East Timor coast and 300 miles (483 kilometers) off the Australian coast in 1,000 feet (305 meters) of water.

Kitan is located in permit 06-105 of the Joint Petroleum Development Area, an area jointly administered by Timor-Leste and Australia. Eni serves as the operator of the field and holds a 40% working interest; Inpex holds 35%; and Talisman Resources holds the remaining 25%.

The oil field was discovered by the Kitan-1 discovery well, drilled by the Songa Venus semisub. The oil field was discovered by the Kitan-1 discovery well, drilled by the Songa Venus semisub. The well reached a total depth of 11,706 feet (3,568 meters), encountering a significant presence of hydrocarbons. Following the discovery, Eni further explored the area and drilled the Kitan-2 well, which confirmed the presence of an oil accumulation. Initial test results indicated a flow rate of 6,100 b/d. The field has an oil density of 59 degrees API.

The operator estimates that Kitan holds about 30 to 40 million barrels of oil and has the potential to produce up to 20,000 bopd. Production commenced on October 10, 2011.

Field Development

On June 10, 2008, Kitan received approval for the field's development plan from the Timor Sea Designed Authority. Afterward, the partners proceeded with development studies of the Kitan field, aiming to devise a development plan within 12 months from receiving the approval.

The Autoridade Nacional de Petroleo (ANP) approved the Kitan field development plan on April 22, 2010. Eni is developing Kitan through three subsea completion wells, Kitan-3, Kitan-4 and Kitan 2-ST1, tied- back to an FPSO.

In June 2009, FMC Technologies received a contract valued at $60 million for the manufacture and supply of subsea equipment for the field. The scope of supply includes three subsea production trees and associated control systems and umbilicals. Delivery of the equipment occurred in 2010.

Eni also contracted Bluewater Energy Services for the chartering, operation and maintenance of the Glas Dowr FPSO, complete with mooring system, including provision of logistics and ancillary services in the Kitan field. The initial contract is valid for 5 years after the start of production but can be extended up to 10 years.

In September 2010, Bluewater Energy asked Sebcorp Marine to upgrade the Glas Dowr. The shipyard repaired the vessel to extend its life another 10 years as well as upgraded the FPSO's internal turret mooring and transfer systems. The marine, utility, electrical and communication, safety, control, monitoring, and production systems were also upgraded. The owners acquired the vessel in 2Q 2011 for deployment.

Technip received a contract to provide project management and engineering, for the supply and installation of flowlines and riser, and for the installation of an umbilical system. Offshore installation started in the first half of 2011 using the Venturer construction vessel from Technip's fleet.

Eni Turns on Taps at Kitan Oil Field
Type: Production Start

Oct. 2011 - Eni has commenced production at the Kitan oil field offshore Australia. The field is being produced through deepwater subsea completion wells connecting to an FPSO, and is expected to reach a maximum production rate of about 40,000 bopd. The operator stated that the development followed a fast-track plan from discovery to production while meeting FID targets, and then commencing production within three-and-half-years from the declaration of commercial discovery. The Kitan field is situated approximately 100 miles (161 kilometers) off the East Timor coast and 300 miles (483 kilometers) off the Australian coast, and is located in around 1,000 feet (305 meters) of water. Eni operates Kitan with a 40 percent interest while INPEX Timor Sea holds 35 percent, and Talisman Resources holds the remaining 25 percent interest.

Technip Receives Subsea Contract for Kitan Field
