Project Description
The Proteus prospect is situated in permit WA-398-P in the Browse Basin offshore Australia. Proteus is situated on a large tilted fault block about 7 miles (14 kilometers) southeast of the Poseidon-1 discovery location.

Proteus-1ST2 was drilled to a depth of 17,224 feet by the Transocean Legend (mid-water semisub) in August 2013. A restricted flow test achieved a maximum rate of 7.3 MMscfd with a flowing wellhead pressure of 4,457psi.

Proteus Well Continues Trend of Success at Greater Poseidon

Sep. 2013 - Drilling and testing at the Proteus prospect off Western Australia is complete. The final sidetrack, Proteus-1ST2, was drilled to a depth of 17,224 feet and was terminated in Jurassic-aged rocks. A flow test carried out across the Plover on Montara formations achieved a maximum flowrate of 7.3 MMscfd through a 16/64" choke with a flowing wellhead pressure of 4457 psi. The flowrate was restricted due to well bore stability concerns. Initial results indicate that significantly higher rates could be achieved with the addition of appropriate infrastructure. Karoon Gas and the operator, ConocoPhillips, are confident that production wells drilled near Proteus could reach commercial rates in excess of 100 MMscfd. Proteus is the third successful well drilled in the Greater Poseidon Area following Kornos-1 and Boreas-1. The partners plan to drill a minimum of 6 wells in the area through 2014.

ConocoPhillips and Karoon Struggle Getting Proteus to Bottom

Jun. 2013 - ConocoPhillips and Karoon Gas Australia, partners in WA-398-P, have been forced to sidetrack an exploration well being drilled on the Proteus prospect by the Transocean Legend (mid-water semisub) off Western Australia. Proteus-1ST1 was successfully kicked-off and drilled to 14,740 feet where a well control event forced the partners to shut-in the well. Drilling will continue once the well control issues are remedied.

Mar. 2013 - Exploration drilling at the Proteus prospect is underway in license WA-398-P off Western Australia. Proteus-1 is the third well in the current five-well drilling campaign using the Transocean Legend (mid-water semisub) and follows the Zephyros discovery in the same license. ConocoPhillips, operator of WA-398-P, and its partner Karoon Gas Australia plan to use the rig throughout 2013 in an effort to determine the size and quality of oil accumulations in the Greater Poseidon trend.

Karoon Provides Greater Poseidon Exploration Update

Mar. 2013 - In a recent update concerning Zephyros-1, Karoon announced plans to begin coring operations after encountering a drilling break in the exploration well. Upon completion of coring activities, drilling will continue to the proposed total depth of 17,618 feet. The Transocean Legend (mid-water semisub) is drilling the well which is operated by ConocoPhillips. Zephyros-1 is located in WA-398-P and is the second well in the company's current exploration program, which consists of a minimum of five wells. Once Zephyros-1 operations are complete, the rig will mobilize to the Proteus prospect in the same license.

ConocoPhillips Set to Spud Boreas-1
Type: Drilling Operations

Jun. 2012 - ConocoPhillips is moving forward with drilling of the Boreas-1 exploratory well in WA-314-P following the final function testing of the blowout preventers for the semisub Transocean Legend (mid-water semisub). The BOPs and marine riser were run to the sea floor, and after function testing, were pulled from the hole for further repair and maintenance. After passing all checks on the surface, they have been re-run to the seafloor for final subsea function testing. The company will drill the second well in the program, Zephyros-1, in permit WA-398-P approximately 4.9 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of the Kronos-1 discovery location. The third well, Proteus-1, will be drilled in WA-398-P approximately 8.6 miles (14 kilometers) southeast of the Poseidon-1 discovery location.
