Corvina has a combined total of 3P reserves of approximately 284 Bcf, or approximately 50 million barrels of oil equivalent, based on gas-in-place data gathered in 2008 from the CX11 platform.

Field Development

In September 2006, BPZ Energy spudded the first well in the Corvina field, CX11-21XD, with the Petrex platform rig, which was successfully mobilized to the fully refurbished Corvina platform using the BPZ-01 tender barge.

Before drilling operations commenced, BPZ Energy secured all environmental permits required to develop the Corvina Gas-to-Power project covering a 10-mile (16-kilometer) offshore gas pipeline, onshore gas processing facilities and a 160MW thermal power plant to be located at the coastal village of Nueva Esperanza.

Following the company's Initial Development Plan, BPZ Energy initiated oil production at its CX11 platform in November 2007. Using two 6,000-barrel capacity tankers leased from the Peruvian Navy, first oil was flowed from the CX11-21XD well, which reached a stabilized rate of 2,500 bopd. This well was then shut after topping off the first tanker with 5,000 barrels of oil to allow the dual-completion of the CX11-14D well, which tested a maximum design throughput of 28 MMcf/d opening the 14D oil tubing string. Once opened, the 14D well flowed at a stabilized rate of 1,900 bopd, producing 5,000 barrels of oil into the second tanker.

Early production commenced so that BPZ Energy could place new wells on extended production tests to gather significant reservoir data for use in optimizing the Corvina field's performance. In 2008, the company installed the seabed pipelines and the mooring system to allow for an improved long-term testing program. This allowed the field to ramp up production efficiently and allow for a better understanding of the behavior and characteristics of the field.

The operator continues to drill additional wells from the CX-11 platform in order to target proven undeveloped locations, and to gather important data to further appraise the size of the field.

Commercial production from the field commenced on Nov. 30, 2010. The field produces roughly about 4,656 barrels of oil per day.

Type: Status Update

Sep. 2010 - BPZ Resources has completed testing of well CX11-23D on the Corvina field, which began the testing phase in mid-September. The well has a sustained initial production rate of about 1,500 bopd. This is the final well drilled from the existing CX-11 platform, so the rig has been removed from the platform in order to complete the installation of facilities for production, as well as gas and water reinjection. The operator claims this equipment is necessary to transition the field into commercial production, which is scheduled to commence on Nov. 30, 2010. Additionally, BPZ was denied its request to continue the EWT of the Corvina 19D well. The well has been shut-in since mid-June and will remain closed until the gas and water reinjection facilities are installed and commissioned at the CX-11 platform. The Corvina oil and gas field is situated in the offshore Block Z-1 in northwest Peru. BPZ Energy acquired a working interest in Block Z-1 in 2001 and became operator with a 100% interest in the license in 2004.

The permit is valid through Nov. 30, 2010. The allocated amount of gas to be flared should allow BPZ to continue producing the well under the same conditions as before, for most, if not all, of the EWT period on the field, stated the operator. On the date of the permit’s expiration, the field is expected to transition into commercial production status. The Corvina oil and gas field is situated in the offshore Block Z-1 in northwest Peru. BPZ Energy acquired a working interest in Block Z-1 in 2001 and became operator with a 100% interest in the license in 2004.

BPZ Preps Peru Well for Commercial Production
Type: Development Activity

Jul. 2010 - BPZ Resources has completed its CX11-22D well, and commenced drilling on the CX11-23D well on the Corvina field. The 22D well was drilled in an up dip location of the field to appraise its oil and gas potential, and was completed to simultaneously produce oil and for the re-injection of formation water to transition the field to commercial production. A preliminary evaluation shows the well has approximately 75 feet (23 meters) of net oil pay; 70 feet (21 meters) of prospective oil pay in the lower zones, and has about 75 feet (23 meters) of net gas pay above the oil zones. During a production test, the well flowed at a rate of 300 bopd but with high gas rates. Gas flowed from an opened higher interval to help better define the gas/oil contact. 22D failed to achieve a consistent initial production rate, so BPZ will work over the well to isolate the gas sand. The 22D well is being produced intermittently to manage the amount of gas produced with the oil. Additionally, BPZ spud the 23D well. The company will begin installing and commissioning gas and water re-injection equipment after the well is completed in order to commence commercial production on Nov. 30, 2010. The Corvina oil and gas field is situated in the offshore Block Z-1 in northwest Peru. BPZ Energy acquired a working interest in Block Z-1 in 2001 and became operator with a 100% interest in the license in 2004.
