Project Description
Considered to be one of the largest and deepest developments in the North Sea is the Schiehallion field, located in the UK sector of the North Atlantic, roughly 100 miles (161 kilometers) west of the Shetland Islands. Situated on Blocks 204 and 205 in waters measuring 1,148 to 1,476 feet (350 to 450 meters), the field is operated by BP, holding a 33.35% interest. Partners include Shell (49.01%), Statoil (5.88%), Murphy (5.88%) and OMV (5.88%).

Following the field's discovery in 1993, appraisal drilling commenced in 1994 and 1995, culminating in a successful Extended Well Test, demonstrating well rates of up to 20,000 bopd. In April 1996, Schiehallion received governmental approval for field development. In addition to Schiehallion, the development plan included the nearby ...

In April 1996, Schiehallion received governmental approval for field development. In addition to Schiehallion, the development plan included the nearby Loyal accumulation, which is located 9 miles (15 kilometers)away.

Together, the area is estimated to hold roughly 600 million barrels of recoverable oil.

Field Development

Due to the deep water depth of the field, it was decided that an FPSO would be used instead of a traditional fixed platform. To date, five drilling centers consisting of 54 wells were drilled into the reservoir. Oil and gas flow along steel pipelines and then into flexible risers to the FPSO for processing - the liquids are then separated into oil, gas and water. The oil is stored in the FPSO prior to export, while the gas is used for fuel or is re-injected and the water is re-injected into the reservoir.

Measuring 807 feet (246 meters) long and 89 feet (27 meters) deep, the Schiehallion FPSO is part crude oil and gas processing plant, and part storage unit that is capable of processing around 200,000 bopd and storing 900,000 barrels of oil. After the oil is processed, the Loch Rannoch shuttle tanker takes the oil to the Sullom Voe terminal in Shetland.

Redevelopment Project

In 2008, the operator decided to redevelop the Schiehallion and Loyal fields to access additional hydrocarbons. This project, Quad 204 Project, includes new surface production facilities, specifically, a new FPSO, new production and water injection wells, and a new subsea infrastructure.

Gas will continue to export to SVT via the existing pipeline system and oil will export to an onshore terminal or direct to market in Northern Europe. The new FPSO will have increased capacity to enable optimum reservoir recovery and extend field life.

According to the operator, several oil and gas discoveries and prospects exist in the area which could, potentially, connect to the new infrastructure.

The subsea equipment is scheduled for installation in 2013 and the drilling of new wells will commence in 2014. Following removal of the existing FPSO in Q3 of 2014, and the new FPSO to be installed in Q1 2015, first oil is expected in Q4 2015.
