Project Description
The Chewa field is located in Block 4 about 50 miles (80 kilometers) offshore southern Tanzania in a water depth of around 4,265 feet (1,300 meters).

In March 2010, BG Group received approval from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to farm into Blocks 1, 3 and 4 offshore southern Tanzania, which Ophir solely owns and operates.

Upon completion of the agreements, BG Group will acquire 60% of Ophir's interests in each of the offshore blocks by contributing 85% toward costs, which includes an initial work program. The blocks span more than 6 million acres (27,000 square kilometers) in the Mafia Deep offshore Basin and the northern portion of the Ruvuma Basin, which are situated in water depths ranging from 328 to 9,843 feet (100 to ...

Exploratory Drilling

In the fourth quarter of 2010, exploratory drilling commenced in Block 4, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) offshore southern Tanzania in a water depth of around 4,265 feet (1,300 meters). The main target within the block was the Chewa-1 prospect.

Ophir successfully drilled the well using the Deepsea Stavanger, resulting in a gas discovery, making Chewa-1 the second of a three-well initial work program planned for Blocks 1, 3 and 4.

Once drilling is completed on Chewa, the operator plans to continue drilling in the area.
