Considered one of Australia's largest resource project, the Wheatstone gas to LNG project incorporates two fields: Wheatstone and Iago, located offshore Western Australia in the Northern Carnarvon Basin.
The Wheatstone Project will produce from exploration permits WA-253-P, WA-17-R, and WA-16-R, located roughly 90 miles (145 kilometers) offshore, approximately 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of Barrow Island and 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Onslow.
Wheatstone
Discovered in August 2004, Wheatstone spans exploration permits WA-17-R and WA-253-P. Situated 110 miles (177 kilometers) west-northwest of Dampier in Western Australia, the Wheatstone gas field lies in waters measuring 700 feet (213 meters) deep.

Wheatstone
Discovered in August 2004, Wheatstone spans exploration permits WA-17-R and WA-253-P. Situated 110 miles (177 kilometers) west-northwest of Dampier in Western Australia, the Wheatstone gas field lies in waters measuring 700 feet (213 meters) deep.
Spudded on July 23, 2004 on WA-17-R, the Wheatstone-1 discovery well was drilled by the Sedco 703 semisub to a total depth of 11,096 feet (3,382 meters). The well encountered 175 feet (53 meters) of net gas sands in the Jurassic Tithionian and Triassic Mungaroo A sands within a 413-foot (126-meter) hydrocarbon column. Constrained by rig equipment, a production test of the discovery well flowed at a rate of 54 MMcf/d (1.5 MMcm/d).
Chevron serves as the operator of Wheatstone, holding a 75% interest; Apache holds a 16.25%; and KUFPEC holds the remaining 8.75%. The Wheatstone field is estimated to hold 4.5 Tcf (127 Bcm) of natural gas.
Iago
Discovered in December 2000, the Iago gas field spans retention permits WA-17-R and WA-16-R, 80 miles (129 kilometers) offshore northwestern Australia. Drilled to a total depth of 11,100 feet (3,383 meters) by the Pride South Pacific semisub, the Iago-1 well encountered gas in the Triassic Mungaroo Formation. After wireline logs and formation tests were completed, the Iago-1 well was plugged and abandoned as a gas discovery on Jan. 3, 2001.
The Iago field was significantly extended in July 2008 when the Iago-2 well encountered additional pay on WA-16-R. Drilled by the Ocean Bounty semisub in 384 feet (117 meters) of water, the Iago-2 well intersected 154 feet (47 meters) of net pay, confirming a southerly extension to the field. Subsequently, a drill stem test over a 105-foot (32-meter) interval flowed at a rate of 53 MMcf/d (1.5 MMcm/d).
Chevron holds 100% interest in the WA-17-R permit and 66.7% interest in the WA-16-R permit. Shell holds the remaining 33.3% interest in WA-16-R.
Field Development
In March 2008, Chevron announced that the Wheatstone project will be developed as a greenfield onshore LNG and domestic gas project. Split into a number of phases, the first phase of development on Wheatstone includes the construction of two LNG processing trains, each with a capacity of between 4 and 7 million tonnes per annum, and a domestic gas plant. The gas and condensate will be processed offshore at two platforms prior to transport to shore for LNG processing.
Over 2008, an extensive seven-well appraisal program was performed on the Wheatstone and Iago fields, confirming that the fields hold sufficient reserves to support the construction of a two-train LNG facility.
Front-end engineering and design was scheduled for the second half of 2009. Two contracts were awarded to two companies: Intecsea will design the subsea gas gathering facilities and pipeline, and Technip will design the production platform. A final investment decision on the first phase of the project is slated for 2011, after the FEED is completed.
Chevron also operates the Greater Gorgon project in the Carnarvon Basin, which is being developed as a subsea tie-back to onshore LNG facilities.

Chevron Targets 25MM Tons/Year Capacity at Wheatstone
Type: Status Update
Jul. 2010 - Chevron has proposed that its Wheatstone LNG plant in Western Australia will have a maximum annual production capacity of 25 million metric tons. The large developing project will reduce the need for future expansions, and will also lessen the need for future LNG-related developments nearby, reported Dow Jones. The Wheatstone project also consists of a plant with a capacity of 625 MMcf/d that will supply the domestic market. The operator remains on track to make a final investment decision in the second half of 2011. The Wheatstone Project will produce from exploration permits WA-253-P, WA-17-R, and WA-16-R, located roughly 90 miles (145 kilometers) offshore, approximately 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of Barrow Island and 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Onslow.

Chevron, Kyushu Sign LNG Agreement for Gorgon, Wheatstone Projects
Type: Operator Update
Jan. 2010 - Chevron and Kyushu Electric Power Company signed an agreement for the delivery of LNG from the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects. Under the agreement, Kyushu expects to receive 0.3 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG for 15 years from the Gorgon project and plans to purchase 0.7 mtpa of LNG from the Wheatstone project for 20 years. The agreement also calls for Kyushu Electric to acquire 1.83% of Chevron's equity share in the Wheatstone field and a 1.37% share in the onshore processing facilities. Combined with its equity stake in production, Kyushu will take 0.8 mtpa of LNG from the Wheatstone project. Construction of the Gorgon project started in the second half of 2009 and first gas is planned for 2014. The Wheatstone project started the FEED phase in July 2009, and a final investment decision is expected in 2011.

Western Australia Offers Chevron 2 Gas Retention Lease Renewals
Type: Status Update
Dec. 2009 - The Government of Western Australia offered two retention lease renewals of exploration permits WA-16-R and WA-17-R, for the Wheatstone LNG project. Norman Moore, Minister for Mines and Petroleum said, "granting the leases (WA-16-R and WA-17-R) in Commonwealth Offshore Waters would help achieve the earliest possible commercial development of the State's vast offshore gas resources." A final investment decision of the project will be made in 2011. Chevron holds 100% interest in the WA-17-R permit and 66.7% interest in the WA-16-R permit. Shell holds the remaining 33.3% interest in WA-16-R.

Chevron, TEPCO Sign LNG Delivery for Wheatstone Project
Type: Operator Update
Dec. 2009 - Chevron and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) signed an agreement for the delivery of 4.1 million tons per annum of LNG for up to 20 years from the Wheatstone project. TEPCO will also acquire 15% of Chevron's equity share in the project and an 11.25% interest in the Wheatstone natural gas processing facilities that will be developed onshore. Located offshore Western Australia in the Northern Carnarvon Basin, the Wheatstone project will be developed in several phases, with the first phase seeing the completion of two LNG processing trains and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to process 8.6 MTPA of LNG. Chevron expects production to commence in 2016.
