Breagh
Operator:RWE-DEA
Water Depth:59 m / 195 ft
Region:Europe - North Sea
Country:UK
Last Updated:Aug 27, 2009    (view update history)
Project Description
Touted as one of the largest undeveloped natural gas discoveries in the UK sector North Sea, the Breagh field is located on Blocks 42/8, 42/9, 42/12, 42/13 and 42/14 in a water depth of 194 feet (59 meters). RWE Dea serves as the operator and holds 70%; Sterling Resources holds the remaining 30% interest.

The discovery well, 42/13-2, drilled on July 12, 1997, encountered gas. The well tested at a rate of 3 MMcf/d, demonstrating the potential for movable hydrocarbons. An earlier well, 42/13-1, drilled by BP in 1968, located to the east of the 42/13-2 well, encountered 43 feet (13 meters) of wet Scremerston Sandstone, but was not deemed commercially viable.

An earlier well, 42/13-1, drilled by BP in 1968, located to the east of the 42/13-2 well, encountered 43 feet (13 meters) of wet Scremerston Sandstone, but was not deemed commercially viable.

The data from this well was used as a guideline when the operator explored the area and drilled a third well, appraisal well 42/13-3. This well was drilled using an oil based mud system to avoid the formation damage experienced in the discovery well. The well, 42/13-3, flowed successfully at a rate of 17.6 MMcf/d, giving the operator encouragement to continue to appraise the area.

In August 2008, the Ensco 70 jackup was contracted to drill two additional appraisal wells on the Breagh field. The jackup stayed on location until January 2009. Currently, the partners are reviewing the data to best determine how to develop the gas field.

Status Updates
Faroe Divests Breagh Stake
Type: Status Update

Aug. 2009 - Faroe Petroleum plc completed the disposal of its entire 10% interest in the Breagh gas field in the UK Southern North Sea Gas basin to RWE Dea UK SNS Limited, for approximately $41.6 million plus interest and working capital adjustments.

RWE Dea Takes Bigger Bite of Breagh in UK North Sea
Type: Acreage Acquisition

Jul. 2009 - The Breagh sales process has come to a successful conclusion with the signing of a fully termed sales and purchase agreement. The buyer, RWE Dea UK SNS Limited, a subsidiary of RWE Dea AG will, on completion, hold a 70% working interest in the Breagh Field and surrounding exploration blocks. Sterling will retain a 30% interest in the Breagh Field and the surrounding blocks, which comprise the greater Breagh area. During the interim period until completion, Sterling and RWE Dea will work together to ensure the transfer of operatorship and focus on further engineering activity to enable final development plan submission before the end of 2009. The sellers of Breagh gas field are a consortium of Sterling Resources, EnCore Ltd., EnCore Petroleum Ltd., RegEnersys Ltd., Stratic Energy Corp., Faroe Petroleum (UK) Ltd. and Petro Ventures Ltd.

Sale of One of North Sea's Largest Undeveloped Gas Fields
Type: Acreage Acquisition

May. 2009 - Breagh, an undeveloped field in the Southern North Sea, which is believed to hold 600 Bcf of recoverable reserves, is up for sale. The Breagh field is owned by six relatively small operators which would struggle to foot the major cost of bringing Breagh into operation, with no infrastructure nearby. While undeveloped gas assets are thought to be the main attraction, Breagh is surrounded by other exploration acreage which could lead to it becoming a major production hub.

Sterling Focused on Farm Out of Breagh Assets
Type: Acreage Acquisition

May. 2009 - Sterling Resources continues to move forward with a potential farm out or sale of a portion of the 45% interest in the Breagh assets in the UK Southern North Sea. The Breagh process continues to evolve and the company continues to examine the options to maintain the program towards full development. Sterling is the operator holding a 45% interest. Other partners include, Regenersys 15%; Encore 15%; Faroe 10%; Stratic 10%; Petro Ventures 5%.

Well 42/13-2 encoutered a gross gas column of 460ft. The well was cored and logged but tested at sub-commercial flow rates, believed to be due to formation damage that occurred during drilling and completion of the well.
